Well . . . this is weird.

Because they opted out of a bowl game, Notre Dame will have its next defense of the Belt next season.

The Irish open up the 2026 season on September 6 against Wisconsin at Lambeau Field. It will be the Badgers’ twenty-second Belt game and their first since a 38–7 loss on October 26, 2019 to Belt-holder Ohio State.

Also, apologies for missing the prior post where Notre Dame got the belt. They got it by virtue of defeating Stanford in Week 14. The Irish’s record in Belt games is now 21–15–2, and the Cardinal are 19–18–1.

A final recap of the Belt’s journey this season:

For those who don’t know what the Belt is, it is an unofficial trophy that traces the lineage of the “best” teams going all the way back to the first-ever CFB game. For a more complete description, check out the /u/BleedScarletandBlack’s post on it. Additionally, a comprehensive database of all Belt games played created by me and /u/BlueSCar can be found here.
