Chelsea winger says Enzo Maresca trusts him ‘and that’s the most important thing’ after rollercoaster year took him from exile under Ruben Amorim to Champions League football

Alejandro Garnacho says he does not regret the way his time at Manchester United ended and that it was an “easy decision” to leave the club.

Speaking publicly for the first time since he left Old Trafford, before Chelsea’s Champions League clash with Atalanta in Bergamo, he was asked whether he regretted the way his time at United ended, to which he replied “no”. He was then asked whether he was sad about the nature of his exit and, again, he said “no”.

“Sometimes in life you have to change things to maybe take a step forward or to improve as a player,” he said. “It was the right moment, also the right club, so it was an easy decision.”

“I spoke with [Maresca, before joining], he explained everything to me,” Garnacho said. “Now working together I think we are doing well, we are going to improve with time, it’s just three months. He trusts me. So that’s the most important [thing] — we have confidence and we are going to improve.

“The most important thing [a coach can give] is confidence. He speaks with me every week and I think we’re going to be better — me as a player and the team all together, with time. We started the season three months ago so there’s confidence between manager and player.”

“He can give much more, but not only Alejandro,” Maresca said. “All the players, we try to work every day with them, just to try to improve them.

“It’s been quite easy to work with him, in terms of he wants to learn, he’s open-minded, he’s working good on the ball and off the ball. And then again, some games he’s better, some games he tries a little bit more. But overall he’s doing well with us.”

Garnacho added that he joined Chelsea “to play my football and show people the player I am”, and praised the influence of his international team-mate Enzo Fernández in making the move to Stamford Bridge. “I am happy to work with him because we are really close,” he said.
