I know I’m a year or so late on this show, but I just watched it and liked it overall. I can be a bit of a snob, but was immediately drawn in by the premise and execution of the first episodes. I thought Anna Sawai’s character and acting were excellent, and I loved that she became the primary focus of the show as it professed.
I don’t understand any of the acting being done by Jarvis, and found his character to be confusingly written and portrayed. It felt like he was doing a stiff, humorless version of Captain Jack Sparrow for long stretches, at other times it felt like he was supposed to be mentally handicapped, like a sling blade situation. It rarely felt like the actor was attempting to convey emotion. He sounded like Martin Short doing an impression of a boring British sailor with nothing to say. Shame Sawai didn’t have more to work with. I’m sure we’ll see her in several interesting roles moving forward. Hard to imagine Jarvis getting any other leading man type roles.
