While ESPN’s Gameday broadcasts from the UW campus, thousands of hunters will be eagerly waiting, with their trusty dawgs, in marshes and ponds across the state for first light - when they get the first chance of the year to blast a flock of ducks out of the air. By kickoff time, state duck season will have been open for 5 hours, just enough time to shoot a limit and head down to Montlake. This will be the first time Oregon has played in Washington on opening day of duck season since 2015.
Oregon has traveled to Washington just twice on opening day of statewide duck season since 2000 (the earliest hunting regulations pamphlet available on Fish and Wildlife’s website).
The first visit was on October 12th, 2013, when #2 Oregon visited #16 Washington, the first time ESPN’s gameday visited UW. RB Bishop Sankey had a big day on the ground for UW, and UW was within 7 at the end of the 3rd, but ultimately Oregon ran away in the 4th quarter to win 45-24.
The second visit was on October 17th, 2015, the only game from 2004 to present where both teams entered the matchup unranked. Washington began to mount a comeback late, but on the last drive with just 1:11 remaining, QB KJ Carta-Samuels entered the game for the first time, relieving injured Jake Browning, promptly throwing a pick and ending UW’s comeback hopes. The Ducks won 26-20.
Oregon has not visited WSU on opening day of Washington duck season since at least 2000, when historical hunting regulation pamphlets are available.
Will the Ducks best the hunters of Washington for a third time on opening day, or will Penix unleash hell through the air too overwhelming for their defenses?
