I have seen a lot of comments that suggest that BYU plays better at night, so I decided to run the numbers from 2020 onward.
- BYU is 21-0 in games that kicked off at or after sunset. In these games, BYU has outscored its opponents by an average of 19 points per game.
- BYU is 12-10 in games that at least occurred partially during the day.
- Quality of opponent doesn’t seem to matter. Without sunlight, BYU beat four ranked teams and 8 P5s. With sunlight, BYU played 2 ranked teams and 7 P5s, but only won two of these games.
Now, things get weirder when you look at games that occur partially at night, partially at day.
- During the day portion of these games BYU was outscored 82-103 (lost this period by 3 points on average).
- During the night portion of these games BYU outscored their opponents 110-82 (positive 4 points margin).
I’m guessing Vegas understands this issue too. Despite losing their QB and having a worse record, TCU is favored by 5 points against BYU. Key issue is that the game takes place during the day.
