*This is a weekly thread to discuss football in the Big 12. Discussion should be limited to football in the conference.*

Week 6 Results
  • Oklahoma State 29 - Kansas State 21

This one was definitely a bit of a surprise. KSU was the 12 point favorite on the road. KSU couldn’t get anything going offensively until Will Howard broke his 70 yard run in the second quarter. Meanwhile Oklahoma State was able to move the ball fairly well - at least well enough to get into FG range. Thier red zone woes were eased with 5 made FGs and securing 3 interceptions. I’m sure this was a frustrating win for the Pokes, but a win is a win.

  • #12 Oklahoma 34 - #3 Texas 30

What a great game for OU fans and neutral fans. Back and forth all game, tied up with 6 minutes in the 4th quarter, and two lead changes in the final two minutes. However, OU’s defense was the star of the show. Holding the Texas offense to just two TDs was quite impressive. Getting the goaline stand from 1st and goal at the 1 showed just how much value ther is in good defense, and not something we’re used to seeing from OU the last decade or so. All that said, I thought Texas clinched it with their go-ahead field goal with 1:17 left to play. OU had success on offense, but most of it was from sustained drives. At this point I figured it was either a Texas win or headed to overtime on a long kick. I listened to the end of the game on the Texas radio broadcast as I was driving to our game, and they were livid about the PI on the final drive. Since I didn’t see it, what do y’all think? With Dillon Gabriel healthy and Venables’ defense, OU looks like the team to beat all alone at the top of the conference. ESPN called this one while Vegas did not.

  • Kansas 51 - UCF 22

A good bounce-back win for the Jayhawks. Of course Jason Bean isn’t Jalon Daniels, but he does a good job of running the offense. 399 rushing yards sure makes the backup QB job easier. I’m sure KU would like to be able to finish a little stronger on defense, but it sure helps when the offense can keep adding points. I’m glad we don’t play KU this year.

  • Iowa State 27 - TCU 14

A similar story to the OSU/KSU game - 4 ints is tough to overcome even though ISU was only able to get 3 points off of them. ISU seemed to get off to a slow start but was able to find some success both through the air and on the ground. I still don’t know what to make of the Cyclones in a very weird year for them. I wouldn’t be surprised if they knock someone out of contention for the CCG.

  • Texas Tech 39 - Baylor 14

Don’t let the score fool you - we only found the endzone once, and it was in garbage time. Just another humiliating loss at home. Our defense can’t get any pressure on the QB or stop a run up the middle. On the other side, we can’t run the ball and it’s pretty hard to throw when the snap is always a package deal - the ball comes with defenders. We started the game off with some tempo on offense, but that quickly went away after we tried to run the ball a couple times. Shapen was doing well with quick-hitting plays, but Grimes refuses to play to our strengths/away from our weaknesses. Tech got a great coach with McGuire, and I think they’ll continue to improve.

I started looking for data to help me with the tiers since I can’t watch every game (especially weeks when Baylor is at home). I looked at data from CFP Resume Rankings. It’s a data driven evaluation of resumes mixed in with strength ratings, which is what I was trying to do anyway. It’s not far off from where I already was.

I could possibly put OU and UT at 1 and 1A, but sub-tiers bother me as they’re just the next tier. Clearly the jump from one to the next is not the same for each of the tiers.

Championship Picks

I suppose I need to finally move on from picking KSU for the conference champion. If I had to place money on it right now I think I would pick Oklahoma. As long as they can continue to find success on offense then I think they could make a CFP run. That defense is legit. I don’t know that I would pick them to beat Texas in a rematch, but for now I’ve gotta go with OU.
