This has been kind of buried because of all the other news, but I think it’s one of the strangest stories around right now.
On Monday, out of nowhere, Ohio University released a statement naming Defensive Coordinator John Hauser as the interim Head Coach.
Included in the release was a single sentence that said: “Head Coach Brian Smith will be on leave for an undetermined period of time beginning December 1.”
Not a single word has come out of the university since.
The only other “news” in the past 48 hours has been from two tweets:
One from some guy at Barstool saying that on Monday afternoon the Athletic Director burst into a staff meeting, kicked out all the assistants and Smith was walked from campus soon after.
The other tweet was from a student reporter quoting Smith’s attorney who confirmed he was asked to leave, denied any wrongdoing, and said Smith hasn’t been charged with a crime.
And…that’s it.
There are rumors, of course, but even those are weak and very speculative at best.
The Bobcats just wrapped up a solid regular season and are preparing for a bowl game. What could he have possibly done that would see him kicked off campus with that kind of urgency, two days before signing day, and with a bowl game coming soon?
