Dolphins use 21 personnel a league-leading 59% of the time. The 49ers are right behind them at 53% 21 personnel and 12% 22 personnel usage.
So the top two offenses use a fullback 59% of the time and 65% of the time. Two teams are tied for third place at 33%, so not far off from half as much as the top two.
Fullback lovers of the world, we’re so back.
Other interesting personnel/formation trends this season…
- Ten teams run the pistol on at least 10% of their plays, all but four teams have logged a snap of pistol this season. The pistol has had a place in the NFL since 2011, but this feels like the year where it’s become a fixture of nearly every offense in the league
- 11 personnel is still the most prolific personnel grouping league wide, all but one team use it on at least 25% of plays. That one outlier? The Atlanta Falcons, who use it just 12% of the time and line up in heavy personnel on 86% of plays. The Falcons also, predictably, are bottom in the league in Pass Rate Over Expected by a fair margin
- The most predictable rushing offense in the league? The Vikings, who run to the left 70% of the time
