I know, I know. It’s a dumb idea. Just think of the logistical problems. For one, managing the travel on such short notice, during the holiday season, would be a nightmare. There is no guarantee you could even get an entire team + staff into a single accommodation. Also, what officials are you going to use? Maybe you can try to fly in a CUSA or FCS squad on short notice if the money is right. And what about TV and radio? If a game happens and nobody sees it, can it change the the playoff rankings? There area a million problems with this idea.
But they should do it anyways. Just think of the chaos. Think of all the other coaches like Deboer and Venables insisting that the game doesn’t count, and the ACC and Big XII coaches insisting that it does. Think of the possibility of Notre Dame desperately trying to schedule something in response. Think of the debates around considering a game for which there is little or no footage in the rankings. It would be madness.
For those that don’t remember, BYU and Coastal Carolina did something similar a few years ago. Granted, this was partially because Coastal Carolina’s original opponent canceled, but there is still somewhat of a precedent.
There is still time! Make it happen!
