first, some context.
i pulled data from pro-football-reference for the super bowl era.
- there have been 25,541 regular season games in the super bowl era.
- of all those, 1929 games had one team score 17 points which represents 7.5% of all games. it’s the most common score.
- teams that score 17 pts win 35% of the time.
- the next most common score is 20 points. it’s happened 200+ times fewer than a 17 point game
- oddly, there have been 20 games that have ended in a 17-17 tie which is not the most common tied score. 20-20 (28 times) and 10-10 (26 times) have happened more often… but this isn’t the weird part…
in order to get to 17 points, there are a lot combinations, but here are the only ones that have happened:
| pts | num games | FG | TD | XP | 2pt conv | safety | notes |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| 17 | 1866 | 1 | 2 | 2 | |||
| 17 | 39 | 3 | 1 | 1 | |||
| 17 | 18 | 1 | 2 | 0 | 1 | ||
| 17 | 3 | 0 | 2 | 1 | 1 | 1 | |
| 17 | 1 | 2 | 1 | 1 | 2 | 1999 jags includes 2 4th quarter safeties | |
| 17 | 1 | 5 | 1 | 2007 bills 5FG and a safety | |||
| 17 | 1 | 3 | 1 | 1 | 2023 steelers 3FG, safety, TD (failed 2pt conv) |
the goofy ones are at the bottom with the safeties. the jags game with two safeties (i went to that stupid game) was prolly the weirdest…
