John Amos complained about Good Times being about JJ as it drifted away from the parents. He got himself fired as a result. Esther Rolle, on the other hand, chose top leave the show because she had enough of JJ and his Dynomite. She did return a year later.
JoAnn Marie Payton left Family Matters because she couldn’t deal with Urkel and him taking center stage on a show which was a spin-off based on her character in Perfect Strangers. But when Urkel was introduced, it turned into a Muppet mess disaster as America fell for the geeky Urkel and Payton got a sore throat from screaming her lines.
