I think Lance Guidry is an outstanding defensive coordinator, and haven’t heard any complaints about DB coach Jahmile Addae. That said, Georgia Tech received the ball with 24 seconds left and no timeouts after they recovered the fumble.
1st down, Miami rushes 4, Jahfari Harvey and Rueben Bain stunt, both coming free to pressure King and force an incomplete pass to the checkdown RB.
2nd down, the nose and tackle stunt, King stands in against the pressure and complete a 30 yard pass to Malik Rutherford. Rutherford dives for the sideline to stop the clock, but the refs move the ball for the first down, and King spikes it with 10 seconds left.
2nd down, Miami again brings four, no stunts, King rolls out right away from pressure, launches a pass on the run without setting his feet, and hits Christian Leary on the Miami 8, who runs it into the end zone for the winning score. Leary slides into the end zone just in time to avoid some flying projectiles thrown by some enraged Miami fans. Good thing their aim was bad.
Leary did a double move that completely fooled Kamren Kitchens, faking a post before blowing by him to cut outside for a corner, and snag King’s pass and run it into the end zone. At the snap, the safeties were 15 yards off the ball, the corners 10 yards off. You can make a decent argument they should have been at 30 and 20, tempt King to complete a shorter pass (first down is irrelevant with only 10 seconds remaining), and converge to make the tackle. Miami was burned because Kinchens played way too aggressive in coverage. Instead of trying to jump the route, just play off and let the receiver catch the ball so you can make the tackle. Kinchens is a junior and a third year player, he should have the football IQ to know what to do in that situation.
So while Cristobal receives most of the justified blame for not simply kneeling the ball after Georgia Tech was out of timeouts, the defensive staff really spit the bit here by not informing the players of their duties in a 30 second drill end-of-game situation. You don’t have to go full prevent, you can still bring pressure and blitz while being intelligent with your coverage on the back end. Your goal should be to force a throw before they’re ready, allow the completion, and make the tackle to let the clock run out.
