I’d been aware of this show for some time & just hadn’t gotten around to watching. I know it originally started as a web series back in 2012 so I began there since it was on HBO Max. The series follows “The Guy” as he travels around NYC on bike delivering pot to his various customers.

I found this series so engrossing even from its early start in the shorts. The eighth episode featuring Hannibal Burress playing himself as a comedian trying to deal with PTSD after a club shooting was very affecting even with a short run time.

I loved how the episodes used local NY actors (many non-names) & gave them a massive spotlight to work in. Some of those actors like Michael Cyril Creighton (Mrs. Maisel & OMITB), who plays an agoraphobic that’s in love with The Guy have gone on to bigger careers. Others like Abigail Bengson, who plays a lonely intimacy coordinator give amazing one off performances & should be featured more on the screen.

Ben Sinclair does a fantastic job behind the scenes writing & directing with his then partner Katja Blichfeld. The duo create such a great vibe.

I found Ben’s portrayal of The Guy to be equal parts funny & touching. He’s an extremely kind hearted & good natured person that tries to see the best in people while occasionally exhibiting saint-like patience. He’s not perfect & a bit of a dreamer though. It’s interesting to chart the progression as his job starts to become less of a specified service over time.

I do think the show was starting to lose some of its momentum in Season 4 even though there were great episodes. It felt like maybe they were relying more on anxiety inducing scenarios continuously than they had been before. That could be just a side effect of my binge though. Either way I definitely recommend checking it out if you’ve never seen it before.
