For the past two years, I have been making a weekly series of posts outlining how many teams could “dream” about scenarios that would have them playing in the College Football Playoff that year, based on criteria of playoff participants from the beginning of the format until now. Here’s where our dreamers stand after Week 6!
Dream Factory: The "Rules"
- The ACC Big 12 Big Ten Pac-12 SEC championship game winners may have at most two losses to remain in play.
- Notre Dame and any P5 teams that didn’t win a championship game may have at most one loss to remain in play.
- Teams in American Conference USA MAC Mountain West Sun Belt FBS Independents (other than Notre Dame) may not have any losses to remain in play.
- Teams that are ineligible for postseason play cannot make the playoff even if they are undefeated. Jacksonville State James Madison Sam Houston are (in my opinion, stupidly) ineligible for postseason play as they transition into full FBS membership, and Arizona State has a self-imposed bowl ban this year.
Dream Diary: The Season So Far
- At the beginning of the season, 129 teams were still dreaming.
- After Week 1, 95 teams were still dreaming.
- After Week 2, 78 teams were still dreaming.
- After Week 3, 73 teams were still dreaming.
- After Week 4, 64 teams were still dreaming.
- After Week 5, 51 teams were still dreaming.
Dreams Dashed: 8
It’s time to wake up for our friends Notre Dame TCU Fresno State UCF Marshall Minnesota California Arizona
Good morning to the Sun Belt whose final dreamer woke up this week!
Hope you can sleep in later next year!
Living the Dream: 43
The following teams can still dream of a scenario in which they make the CFP:
- SEC (10): Alabama Auburn Florida Georgia Kentucky LSU Missouri Ole Miss Tennessee Texas A&M
- ACC (9): Clemson Duke Florida State Louisville Miami NC State North Carolina Syracuse Wake Forest
- Pac-12 (8): Colorado Oregon Oregon State UCLA USC Utah Washington Washington State
- Big 12 (7): BYU Kansas Kansas State Oklahoma Oklahoma State Texas West Virginia
- Big Ten (7): Iowa Maryland Michigan Ohio State Penn State Rutgers Wisconsin
- Conference USA (1): Liberty
- Mountain West (1): Air Force
Hitting the Snooze Button: 14
The following teams are one loss away from “waking up” - sorted from least likely to wake up next week to most likely, per ESPN’s FPI: Clemson Colorado LSU Air Force Rutgers Liberty Kansas State Wake Forest Oklahoma State Texas A&M Florida Auburn NC State Syracuse
Dream Theater: The Week Ahead
There is one “loser wakes up” games next week:
We have one snoozer on bye: Clemson
With 43 teams still dreaming, 14 teams hitting the snooze button, 1 snoozers on bye and 1 “loser wakes up” game, next Sunday we’ll have between 31 and 42 teams still dreaming.
Good luck to the teams still dreaming about the playoff!
