I recently finished both seasons of AMC’s Interview with the Vampire and I am legit blown away. I was vaguely aware that the show existed but I didn’t really have it on my radar because it’s pretty damn far from anything I’d ever watch - a gay vampire romance based on books I’d always kinda written off as soapy pulp. I kept seeing really good reviews for it though and my wife had been wanting to watch it as well so I thought fuck it, let’s give it a shot.
I’m genuinely shocked at how good this turned out to be. The first season was amazing but the second season turned things up to another level and is legitimately some of the best TV I’ve seen in years, maybe ever?
The show does everything really well but what really stands out the most are the acting performances. Jacob Anderson as Louis is truly a revelation. He was solid enough as Grey Worm in Game of Thrones but I had no idea he had this in his bag. He honestly blew me away, playing this extremely complex character - a gay black man in the not-so-friendly past coming to terms with who he is, in his sexuality but also as a vampire and ultimately as a human being. He’s equal parts charming, vulnerable, funny, scary and tragic.
Sam Reid as Lestat on the other hand is a BLAST. Just one of the most purely fun characters I’ve come across but still full of incredible depth. A vile, toxic, manipulative narcissist you find yourself almost rooting for because of how much tragedy he imbues the character with.
The relationship and chemistry between the two characters really drives the narrative as they go through their turbulent, toxic and volatile love story. The secondary characters are also extremely well-written and well-acted. Claudia, Daniel and Armand are all amazing characters.
it’s a very character-driven story, and it’s fairly slow paced but it still has some cool lore, worldbuilding and plot development. Definitely won’t be for everyone though, especially if you’re looking for a ton of story and plot.
Aside from the acting and writing, it’s really a 10/10 from a production standpoint. It looks absolutely gorgeous - the set design, costumes, and overall direction and cinematography are top-tier prestige TV quality.
I really can’t recommend the show highly enough. It’s dark, sad, brutally violent, melancholy, romantic and can even be pretty damn funny at times. It will just make you feel a lot of things. It uses the conceit of immortal vampires as a vehicle for ultimately telling a story about toxic, emotionally abusive relationships, and finding your way out of them to find out who you are as a person.
