His senior year at Army in West Point he played as a 6’ 9” 260 lb WR. For a big man like that in a triple option offense he was still able to catch 34 passes for 522 yards and 5 TDs. He went undrafted in the NFL Draft, worked out with the Bengals as a TE but did not make the team.

In 2010 he was commissioned as a second lieutenant and attended Airborne, Ranger and Infantry schools. He did three tours in the Army including being a rifle platoon leader in Afghanistan during Operation Enduring Freedom where he received a Bronze Star for combat valor and rescuing wounded soldiers while under enemy fire. He left the Army with a rank of Captain.

In 2014 he had another tryout with the Eagles as a DE with plans to go back to the Army if he didn’t make an NFL roster. After being cut, Mike Tomlin noticed him and signed him to the Steelers practice squad and converted the 250 lb DE to a 340 lb OT.

By the time he retired in 2022 he had played 113 games as an OT including 107 consecutive starts without missing a game, 2 Pro Bowl selections and he even caught a TD pass from kicker Chris Boswell in 2018.
