Wasn’t sure if I should post this here or /r/nfl_draft but went with here. CBS Sports’ latest Mock Draft had three quarterbacks going in the first round, all in the top five- Fernando Mendoza, Dante Moore, and Ty Simpson. It also noted that all three have eligibility left if they wanted to go back to school.

Fernando Mendoza has nothing to gain by returning to Indiana. He’s likely to be the first quarterback selected (guaranteed if Moore and Simpson return to school). He’s had multiple years as a starter and there’s enough tape on him out there. Mendoza should and almost certainly will enter the draft.

Moore and Simpson are more interesting, as they will enter the NFL with only one year of college starting experience should they enter the draft. This could (but might not) scare off NFL teams. Should they return to school to get more tape on themselves out there? Is there anything to be gained if they’re already likely to be first rounders? Not saying they will or should go back to school, just that there might be some logic behind it.

So I have two questions I’d like to discuss:

  1. Is there anything for Moore and Simpson to gain if they return to school next year?
  2. In the unlikely event that Mendoza, Moore, and Simpson all return to school, who will be the first quarterback selected and how early will they go?
