The Pac 12 Network was a good idea, the B1G Network, the SEC Network, and the ACC Network are all cash cows. The Pac 12 Network has been a disaster. The biggest mistake was not making the network a joint venture with FOX or ESPN, like the others. (B1G - Fox, SEC - ESPN, ACC - ESPN). Fox and ESPN used their leverage with their broadcast networks and other popular cable networks, to guarentee distribution for the conference networks the were in.
The Pac wanted 100%, but ended up with a vastly smaller pie, such that 100% of the Pac 12 Network is less money then 25% of the ACC Network. Even with the well noted failures of the Pac 12 Network, it still returned $40 M in profit off $100 M in revenue.
Of course, the money difference was only part of the problem, possibly for the Pac lessor issue. The Pac-10 had a major problem with exposure. Up until 2010, the PAC 10 had a winning record against every other conference. Despite this it was very rare for a one loss Pac school to be taken as comparable to a one loss school from the other conferences. In 2000 there was major arguments about if FSU really deserved the BCS title game over Miami, but nobody talked about UW which had beaten Miami. In the subsequent year, Oregon would be passed up by Nebraska and almost Colorado.
The Pac 12 Network, rather then addressing the exposure problem has instead contractually instutionalized it. The Pac 12 Network, because it’s independent of FOX and ESPN, structured their media contracts around slots rather than having some sort of contractual flexibility. The Pac-12 Network is basically guarenteed to have 3 games a week. This weekend the Pac 12 only has 4 games. 3 games on the Pac-12 Network and one game on ESPN.
The games this week are:
#13 WSU @ UCLA - Pac 12 Network
CU @ ASU - Pac 12 Network
#15 OSU @ Cal - Pac 12 Network
UA @ #9 USC - ESPN 7:30 kickoff
With only one game off the PAC 12 Network, that’s basically always going to be the late night kickoff. And two games of top 15 teams travelling on the road to teams in major media markets, and neither game on network. WSU @ UCLA won’t even be on basic cable in much of Los Angelas.
