I was very much enjoying season three until they got near the end. I appreciated the three timelines, unreliable narrator & lead performances. I also thought the mystery was pretty engrossing.

Once they interviewed the Hoyt housekeeper Regina in episode 7 & she told them about Isabel, everything fell into place. I felt like things were downhill from there. The music cues that had been mostly on point veered into a sound that was so melodramatic it bordered on parody.

Wayne’s confrontation with Hoyt didn’t hit the right tone because it was obvious he was just covering up for his daughter’s actions. The whole Junius reveal was almost Scooby-Doo esque. His monologue laying out everything after nearly 8 hours felt cheap & silly.

Going into Night Country I only knew that there was a large group of people that thought it was awful. As I was watching I could see in parts why some wouldn’t enjoy it. I was though. The setting & Jodie Foster were doing a lot of heavy lifting for me.

I was onboard right up until minutes before it ended. I thought finally after 4 seasons it was all going to boil down to something supernatural. I was completely okay with that & didn’t actually need a big explanation for it.

When the reveal came that a group of (mostly) indigenous) women were responsible for the scientists fate I couldn’t believe what I was seeing. While I can appreciate the idea of women marginalized & overlooked in a town that’s been taken over by outsiders being the culprits, it didn’t remotely land.

There wasn’t nearly enough groundwork laid for that to be a satisfying conclusion. You could argue possibly that was the point since they were so in the background. I don’t buy that. Even worse is them trying to have it both ways by also alluding to a mystic answer for what ultimately happened to the scientists.

That twist erased the good will built up in prior episodes for me. I could’ve been willing to overlook faults or inconsistencies because I was just appreciating the vibe of the show. Instead the left field ending brought those issues to the forefront.
