Hello r/CFB! Welcome to the 2023 Big XII Uniform Tracker in Week 5! Boy howdy have we had a mix up in this upside down league. While Kansas State and OSU had the day off, the rest of the league engaged in a few shenanigans. Boy, I’m excited to go through these. In case you are unfamiliar with how my tracker works, I catalog every Big 12 team’s uniform combination week-to-week, and also look at the opposition’s threads. I also compile our future institutions in Arizona, Colorado, Arizona State, and Utah. I provide a few of my thoughts on the game, the uniforms, and a brief history of the game and/or fun facts.
I’m u/matte_purple and let’s 3, 2, 1, go!
Brigham Young University Cougars vs University of Cincinnati Bearcats (BYU Wins, 35-27)
BYU: Royal/Royal/Royal (Link: )
UC: White/White/White (Link: )
The first regular season Big 12 win for BYU came against the Bearcats. And hey, you’ve gotta start somewhere! The Cougars totaled only 38 yards until their final first-half drive. Still, they grabbed an early 7-0 lead when CB Jakob Robinson snagged a 42 yd pick six for BYU’s first score. After a tough first half, Cincinnati looked to regain some footing, but finishing drives proved problematic, settling for two field goals in the red zone. Couple that with BYU’s zero turnovers, a sold-out crowd on a Friday, and low penalties; you’ve got yourself a Cougar victory.
Boy howdy, this was a beautiful matchup. Starting with UC, I love the all white look. I know white helmets tend to be seen as unlucky by much of the fanbase, but their record for this year is 1-1, so it can’t be that bad (last worn in Week 1 of this year). I wish there was a little bit more red in the suit, but overall, these looked excellent, especially against the all-royal BYU. Speaking of, the Cougars looked dashing in this repeat of Week 2 last year. Of course, last year they rocked a gray facemask. I think I would have preferred some white pants versus a monochrome royal look, but honestly, the color is just so sexy that I can’t be picky.
University of Texas Longhorns vs University of Kansas Jayhawks (Texas Wins, 40-14)
KU: Blue/White/Blue (Link: )
UT: White/Orange/White (Link: )
Death, taxes, and the 2023 Texas Longhorns waiting until the second half to put away the game. The Burnt Orange faithful were helped out by Big 12 Preseason OPOY Jalon Daniels sitting out of the game due to back tightness, and backup QB Jason Bean barely made a dent in a Texas team that settled for field goals multiple times throughout the game. Star QB Quinn Ewers had a pretty remarkable game yardage wise, tossing for 325 yds on 25-35 attempts, notching one TD and INT each. RB Jonathon Brooks was the real key to victory, running for an impressive 218 yds on 21 carries with 2 touchdowns, to boot. With Jalon Daniels potentially out for more games, will KU recover against a hair-on-fire UCF team this weekend?
Yet again, KU’s uniform refresh looks incredible. The “new-car” smell has not worn off of these, and I am simply satisfied with how these look. The flow of the uniform is great, block font is an upgrade, no horrible “KU” Trajan wordmark, and the retro striping all make this look just superb. What better team to contrast that striking blue against than Texas? The burnt orange against the dark blue is magnificent (and scientifically more striking because they are complementary colors with radically different wavelengths). Texas - of course - looked good, as always. The Longhorns continue to roll.
Texas Tech University Red Raiders vs University of Houston Cougars (TTU Wins, 49-28)
Houston: Red/White/White (Link: )
TTU: Black/Red/Black (Link: )
The Red Raiders were victorious in the first Big 12 meeting of former Southwest Conference foes despite 335 yds passing and 4 first-half TDs from Houston’s Donovan Smith, their former quarterback. Also pushing the Lubbock crew along was an incredible kickoff return TD from WR Drae McCray paired with a scoop and score blocked punt courtesy of WR Loic Fouonji. After a guns-blazing first half, things slowed down, with 14 total points in the second half and a Houston shutout. Texas Tech may finally have some momentum, and the Cougars may have some motivation to strike back against a surprising Mountaineer team in Houston.
Okay, so Houston has had a real problem with minimalism. Like many teams that I track, they walk a fine line between clean and bland. These fall a little too far into the “bland” category for me. Maybe it’s the large amounts of blank white space, or the interlocked UH logo that just reminds me of a Big 10 school, I need something that screams HOUSTON at me. Maybe its a unique font, or an alternate logo, or something. These look fine, but you could easily replace any other team name on the front and I would buy it. I need more identity! Am I being too hard on Houston?
Texas Tech wore an excellent showcase for their school colors. This look strikes me as a classic TTU uniform combo. I especially love the Mike Leach Pirate Flag patch on the back of the helmet (although I won’t get into the actual ceremony held there.) It’s a good way for the fans and players to honor an excellent man. I could hit you with the ordinary gripes about the weird shoulder stripes and what have you, sure, but I overall just LIKE these. This is probably my favorite sequence of colors for the Red Raiders. I would love t see this same combo, but ith the throwback style some point down the road.
Baylor University Bears vs University of Central Florida Knights (Baylor Wins, 36-35)
BU: White/White/White (Link: )
UCF: Black/BlackBlack (Link: )
BAYLOR. UCF. WHAT THE HELL GUYS? I don’t even have to tell y’all what happened here. A massive collapse from UCF paired with a miracle from the Baylor Bears led to an incredible 28-point comeback, the largest in Baylor’s history. This was a comedy of errors for both teams. I am in utter shock.
UCF opened their first Big 12 regular season home opener in style. The “Knightmare” combo looked excellent in a white-out at the Bounce House, and I only have one real gripe: the gold shading is not consistent through the uniform. Other than that, these are FANTASTIC. The things I like most about these UCF uniforms? Well, the Knight is on both shoulders, not the pegasus (which I don’t really like.) That’s a change I really appreciate. I also like the subtle stars on the pant leg in lieu of a stripe, and the sword-esque helmet stripe. The “ORLANDO” on the front helmet bumper is another good touch. Great look from the Knights.
Baylor, much like Houston, dabbles with the dark art of minimalism. This time, however, I think they pulled it off. The notches in the font, the revamped 2019 bear head logo on the collar, there’s enough substance on this look to put it over the edge into safety. I think TV numbers would be excellent. These are still pretty blank, but not as formulaic as some other all white uniforms. The all-white combo moves to 4-1 since the 2019 refresh. I sure do wish Baylor would revert back to actual gold, but alas, the world moves on.
University of Oklahoma Sooners vs Iowa State University Cyclones (OU Wins, 50-20)
OU: Red/Red/White (Link: )
ISU: Red/White/Red (Link: )
Man, ISU came out swinging. After a brutal interception thrown by ISU QB Rocco Becht, he proceeded to laser a 51-yd TD pass to WR Jaylin Noel, and launched a 67-yd TD for WR Higgins. Although they only scored 20, ISU did show some improvements. OU had an impressive offensive showing. The Sooners put up the most passing yards for any team against Iowa State since October 2021. Gabriel also ran for two scores — the first game of his career with multiple rushing touchdowns. Once again, OU let loose the fireworks and found another win. Let’s see how they do against their arch-rival Texas next week.
Red. Damn was this game red. You could say OU was definitely seeing red (ha, get it?) this game. Anyways, I won’t say much about the Sooner’s look, as it stays the same. Iowa State had a similar look as well. They wore this same combo in Week 3 of this year, and wore it twice last season. While I like the all-white look ISU puts out, this may be one of my more favorite away looks they produce. The symmetry and color are pleasing. Like I said in Week 3, I especially love the back helmet bumper, featuring the remarkable and powerful words “I Will” in Jack Trice’s own handwriting. We’ll hear more about that next week, during the Jack Trice Legacy game in Ames.
Texas Christian University Horned Frogs vs West Virginia Mountaineers (WVU Wins, 24-21)
TCU: Black/Black/Black (Link: )
WVU: White/White/Blue (Link: )
The Mountaineers secured their first 2-0 start in the Big 12 since 2018 by rallying from an emotional scene of teammate Aubrey Burks getting taken off on a cart with a scary neck injury. We are hoping for good news from him and the several other players, namely Trevor Lathan and Sean Martin. Crucial to the win was special teams play. WVU’s Mike Lockhart had a FG blo…
