I feel like statists really... really should consider the concept of risk profiles if they actually care about suffering and death. Let's look at COVID. Remember at the beginning of the pandemic when people were ready to line up for challenge trials for the COVID vaccines? People ready to put their lives on the line when many thought the mortality rate could be as high as 5%. Ready to put their health on the line so that many more could potentially be saved.
But what happened? The government said no. And hundreds of thousands of people died because vaccines had to follow the FDA's route. But will statists ever acknowledge this? No.
On the other hand, how many could have been saved if vaccines could have been administered while phase III trials were ongoing? Doesn't matter; statists don't think you should be allowed to consider risks and make up your own mind.
Regardless of how you feel about COVID or the vaccine, I think how this has all gone down should be a nail in the coffin for statist arguments about how the government knows what is best for us and that only society can be the judge of what's in our best interest as individuals.
