There’s been an awful lot of talk about how far the West Coast teams will have to travel for their new B1G schedules, and it’s warranted. Data on total travel distance goes back to 2018 (I could calculate it further, but it would take forever) mostly thanks to u/JeromesNiece. Hawaii, due to their closest conference for being over 2,400 miles away, is the only team that’s had to travel further than these teams for a conference schedule. Assume I mean “non-Hawaii teams” whenever I say “teams” in the rest of this post
In 2024 Washington will have B1G away games at Indiana, Iowa, Oregon, Penn State, and Rutgers for a total distance of 7,595 miles. Only 7 teams since 2018 (including 2023) have travelled that far in their ENTIRE schedule. Of those, 4 played at Hawaii and the other 3 had at least 3 OOC away games. 2024 Washington has 0 OOC away games
2025 Oregon plays at Iowa, Northwestern, Penn State, Rutgers, and Washington for a total of 8,337 miles. Only two teams since 2018 have travelled further in an entire season, 2018 Navy (12,094 miles) and 2019 Army (10,290 miles). Both played at Hawaii
2026 USC and 2028 Washington also break the 8,000 mile mark with 8,172 and 8,189 miles of B1G away games, respectively. Everyone of the 4 teams who travelled further in a single season (the two above, plus 2021 and 2023 NMSU) all travelled to Hawaii.
In addition, 2026 USC currently has an OOC away game scheduled at Ole Miss. If that game remains, that USC team will travel the third most (9,810 miles) of any team since 2018. If UCLA’s 2024 game at Hawaii remains, their 9,517 mile total will also be good for third most (until it’s beaten by USC in 2026)
To further show how absurd this is: 2022 Nebraska currently holds the record for furthest distance travelled by a Power 5 team, with 6,679 miles. That is 1,700 miles fewer than Oregon’s 2026 B1G slate and over 3,000 miles fewer than USC’s 2026 schedule. Nebraska only achieved this record by playing in Ireland. 2022 Vanderbilt is in second place with 5,739 miles of travel carried by a game at, obviously, Hawaii
