This happens in long-running tv shows all the time - though more often in sitcoms - where one of the series leads will get behind the camera for an episode in a later season. I guess the idea being that the cast and crew know the show so well 5+ seasons in that it’s a good chance for one of the actors to practice sitting in the director’s chair.

B.J. Novak directed “Scott’s Tots” in The Office. Bryan Cranston directed the S5 episode of Breaking Bad, “Blood Money”. David Schwimmer actually directed quite a few episodes of Friends.
