I’ve watched both True Detective and Fargo, and I find it interesting how each one starts with a pretty standard detective/crime-narrative foundation, but then layers in non-normative elements (supernatural, sci-fi, weird phenomena) that shift the tone.
In Fargo Season 2, set in 1979, you’ve got the main crime plot … but then suddenly you get UFO-type lights and ambiguous alien vibes.
In True Detective Season 4 (Night Country), again you’ve got detectives investigating murders, but the “spiral” symbol, visions, the idea of the veil between worlds being thin — it leans into the paranormal.
Do you think the supernatural / sci-fi parts enhance the crime story (make it richer, more layered) or distract from the detective-work and realism?
Between the two shows, which do you think integrates those weird elements better (without losing the grounded detective/crime core)?
And I personally think Fargo has upper hand over true detective because of later seasons, while season 1 of true detective stays top.
