It comes in a letter by the committee requesting further information as to why the Government has not accepted key findings of its report into transnational repression.

Published in July, the report warned of the growing threat of transnational repression in the UK, with foreign governments being increasingly bold in their attempts to silence and intimidate individuals and communities in the UK. It called on the Government to show greater leadership by providing stronger support to victims and preventing the use of vexatious lawsuits and INTERPOL red notices.

In the letter, the committee welcomes the Government’s positive response to some of the issues raised including raised in the report including commitments to improve data collection and police training.

However, the committee requested further information as to why the Government has declined to take steps in other key areas.

This includes the decision on including China in the enhanced tier of the Foreign Influence Registration Scheme (FIRS) and a clear timetable for** taking stronger action against the malicious use of SLAPPS to silence dissent**.
