They do an amazing job here putting you in the headspace of the lead character Camille. I don’t know if I’ve ever seen a show that did as good of a job making the viewer feel as if you were in the POV of the lead character. Camille’s headspace is a terrible place to be in as well.
She’s been through decades of unresolved trauma & does her best to numb it in a constant drunk. Seeing the world through her eyes is a dizzying experience. I wasn’t familiar with the director Jean-Marc Vallée (RIP) prior to this but his style is hypnotic. It looks Jean-Marc was credited as an editor for the series along with a larger team of people.
You can’t take your eyes off the screen since you don’t want to miss a single frame of info. Even though I did my best to focus I’m sure there’s still things I didn’t catch. Camille’s state also led me to question just about everything on the screen since she was far from a reliable narrator.
The slow crawling horror in the end episodes was almost unbearable. The big realization of what was actually happening in her childhood come relatively early in the series. Things just lurched forward from there which just created this persistent dread.
I will say I wish they would have gone through with the complete book ending. I can understand though why they didn’t.
