If you go on the website and see what categories will be presented, be it during the show or winner announcements made before going to commercial, you’ll find that they’ve implemented a new category: Best Variety Series.

This is the part where I hope to get user reactions. What other shows will they be able to nominate in that category beyond SNL & [presumably] Last Week Tonight? Obviously Colbert, Kimmel, Meyers and even Mulaney won’t because BFCA is keeping the Talk Show category.

I’ve been saving PDFs of Emmy nomination ballots for eight years now and when looking at the submissions for Scripted Variety Series, very few shows from the very miniscule set even qualify because some of them didn’t air this year and had only aired between June and December of last year.

I can’t even find forthcoming shows that would qualify. Would The Rehearsal qualify for a CCA nod for Variety Series?

Can’t they just blend the categories?
