Of the 23 teams that still have 1 loss or less, 20 of them can still theoretically finish the regular season with 1 loss or less, including FIVE in the SEC, four in the ACC, three in the Big Ten and Big XII, and two in the American and MWC.
That’s absurd! This is a direct result of the runaway expansion of conferences and an obvious consequence.
The current system is not sustainable. Obviously many of the teams will not finish with less than two losses, but there’s a very good chance that a one loss team will get left out of the playoff this season.
Conference championships will narrow the list, but how is the CFP committee going to stick with it’s stated goal of not leaving out conference championship losers when so many teams can potentially finish with one loss and not even make their conference title game?
