The video shows Bailey grabbing Rebilas with staff trying to separate them.

The details are not clear, however there has been a position shared in an Instagram comment section by another professional photographer , Mike Olbinski, that Bailey was upset with being photographed after the loss.

“From the photographer who is my good friend and has shot like 12 Super Bowls and is a seasoned pro: I was shooting all the Texas tech players walking off the field with a 100-300mm lens and one player didn’t like it and walked over to me and got in my face asking why I was taking his picture. I replied, “because you’re the star player” and walked away. Then he came back for me yelling “don’t take my fucking picture”. Maybe before you attack the media guy remember to find out the full story first. He was just doing his damn job on the field.

That position can be found in the comment section of this post: www.instagram.com/p/DQFoSPsjc9_/

There is also a post made by Mark Rebilas where he describes the incident.

“Unfortunately I don’t have any cool photos from [the ASU field rush] because I was busy filing a police report after the star player on the losing team took issue with me doing my job and thought he needed to put his hands on me. Got a little scary as multiple players joined in with their teammate but thankfully the ASU chief of police saw it happen and helped get the players away from me. Good times!”

I haven’t found a statement from Texas Tech, the Big 12, or David Bailey.

There is no excuse for a player to touch a photojournalist like that; if a photojournalist says something outrageous (unlikely with a professional), they can be blacklisted by the team (and beyond), but an unwanted physical touching like that is 100% off the table.

I am also a sports photographer that’s shot several college football games. These games aren’t easy to get into. Getting to shoot even one game is a massive privilege that someone who’s spent thousands of dollars on camera equipment wouldn’t risk losing. I can say with 99.99% certainty that Rebilas didn’t say something inflammatory or anything that would warrant a reaction like that. Rebilas has been shooting for a long time, you don’t shoot several Super Bowls by badmouthing players.
