Original Title: After Week 8, SMU, Georgia Tech, and Virginia are all undefeated in conference play and will not play each other. No other such trios exist but an undefeated #7 Georgia Tech could still miss the conference championship on tie breakers.

At the start of the season, I looked at which trios of teams didn’t play each other for the ACCBig TenBig XII, and SEC. I then tracked which combinations of undefeated trios were still possible. We are now down to only one possible combination left.

ACC Tiebreakers are as follows, but the one that likely matters is the fifth, "Combined win-percentage of conference opponents."

  1. Combined head-to-head win-percentage among the tied teams if all tied teams are common opponents.
  2. If all tied teams are not common opponents, the tied team that defeated each of the other tied teams. If all tied teams are not common opponents and no tied team defeated each of the other tied teams, but a tied team lost to each of the other tied teams, such team shall be eliminated and removed from the tie.
  3. Win-percentage against all common opponents.
  4. Win-percentage against common opponents based upon their order of finish (overall conference win percentage, with ties broken) and proceeding through other common opponents based upon their order of finish.
  5. Combined win-percentage of conference opponents.
  6. The tied team with the highest ranking by the Team Rating Score metric provided by SportSource Analytics following the conclusion of regular season games.
  7. The participant shall be chosen by a draw as administered by the Commissioner or Commissioner’s designee.

So who has the edge? Right now it’s extremely tight with Virginia at 42%, Georgia Tech at 40%, and SMU at 39%. I would guess SMU’s number will go up as Miami plays more games, but one of those games is against SMU which SMU would have to win.

I’d be shocked if this happens but it’s fun to track.
