At the end of week 8, both Vandy and Bama are sitting at 6-1 records and acquiring bowl eligibility after beating both of their opponents. While fanbases of both schools are likely reacting to their fresh bowl eligibility differently, with Bama fans feeling like it’s business as usual and Vandy fans being over the moon about accomplishing this feat before November, it’s an impressive feat nonetheless. Now, most of you are probably thinking that because it happened in the same weekend, they essentially crossed that threshold at the same time. But most of you didn’t go to Vanderbilt, and most of your school’s players don’t sign lucrative NIL deals to play school. And as our experts hailing from the Vanderbilt of the North (Harvard) would tell you, being technically correct is the best kind of correct. And I’m here today to prove to you in two simple statements that Vandy became bowl-eligible before Bama did:
- Vanderbilt secured their 6th win at approximately 2:21 PM CDT
- Alabama secured their 6th win at approximately 10:20 PM CDT
So there you have it: Vandy beat Bama to bowl-eligibility by 8 hours, courtesy of our ESPN overlords. QED
I was going to come up with a full list of teams lagging behind Vandy, but to be honest, it would be a lot faster to give you the teams that managed to pounce on 6 wins before Vandy did. So if your school’s on this list (in no particular order), here’s to you:
- Ohio State
- Indiana
- Texas A&M
- Ole Miss
- Texas Tech
- Georgia Tech
- BYU
- Memphis
- UNLV
- Houston
You might ask: What could one do with this information? And to be honest, there’s really not much you could do. If your team got bowl eligibility first, it’s not that impressive to brag about getting six wins before Vandy did. And if you’re Bama, whom I unfortunately had to put on blast in this post for the impact factor, at least you can say that you beat Vandy on the field this year. But useless analyses like this one are what happens when you give a 6-1 start to hyped up fans who are so accustomed to losing that we used to celebrate winning the coin toss.
