Here me out. Tech and State are breaking up because of conference realignment. These schools are rivals that are splitting. There are only 3 rivalries that are breaking up due to realignment; Oklahoma / Oklahoma State, Oregon / Oregon State, Washington / Washington state. Only 2 of these schools match the colors of the teams; Washington State and Oklahoma. Washington State is the state school, however.

Of course, Tech is blue while Washington is not and UW is not ‘Washington Tech’, but is Dr. Pepper really going to call them ‘University’ over ‘Tech’? That makes no sense. UW is basically a STEM school anyway. Not to mention, Keurig could face a lawsuit if they used purple.

Also, Tech claims they have “higher academic standards” and State does not dispute his comment. Oklahoma / Oklahoma state and Oregon / Oregon State have similar standards while there is a discrepancy between Washington / Washington State. The rest of their conversation can further prove my theory, though it is mostly banter.

Tech and State are Washington and Washington State. Case closed.

Edit: Yes, State does claim “we’ll still outrecruit you,” but for all we know, she’s just shit talking as a cope. Also, taken from another comment, what school that gets left behind outrecruits? It could also be ignorant fans that don’t know much about sports and recruitment.
