The Tank Job of the Week is an award for the FBS team that did the best job of humiliating itself over the weekend. Whether they blew a large lead, choked away a spot in the limelight, lost a game they had absolutely no right losing, or completely screwed everything on a last second blunder, the TJOTW winner sets the gold standard in college football misery.
PREVIOUS WINNERS
- Baylor Bears (lost to Texas State 42-31)
- Nevada Wolf Pack (lost to Idaho 33-6)
- Oklahoma State Cowboys (lost to South Alabama 33-7)
- Minnesota Golden Gophers (lost to Northwestern 37-34)
LAST WEEK: It was the Floyd of Rosedale, TJOTW edition, with Minnesota and Iowa dueling it out for the most votes. Unlike the actual recent football games, however, here its Minnesota getting the win, their implosion to Northwestern coming in a bit stronger than Iowa’s complete ineptitude on offense. It’s the second time in three seasons on TJOTW on Reddit that the Gophers have taken the Week 4 vote, after their loss to Bowling Green back in 2021.
Speaking of blowing large leads and Bowling Green, this week does have a couple of doozies, but overall I feel this is a much weaker crop than the usual fare. I felt I really had to dig much deeper than usual to properly flesh out the field.
NOTE: For Ease of Counting, please use carats in your vote, like this: . Thank you, and thanks for participating!
HONORABLE MENTIONS: LSU’s defense, Nebraska’s offense, seeing way too many heartbreaking injuries, Pat McAfee’s completely idiotic comments on Washington State.
And now, the nominees for Week 5 are…
CONNECTICUT HUSKIES (lost to Utah State 34-33)
They led 17-0, then surrendered 24 straight to the Aggies… all in the first three quarters! That set up a dogfight of a fourth quarter, with UConn hanging in there and setting up the tying touchdown with just forty seconds left. And then the extra point just got stuffed down their throat and the Huskies end the game still searching for their first win. If the Tank Job of the Week had an official facial expression, it would be Jim Mora’s after that block.
FLORIDA GATORS (lost to Kentucky 33-14)
Worst loss to Kentucky since 1979, and that 31-game winning streak over the Cats seems a long time ago now. The Gators couldn’t gain traction on offense, and their once-potent defense got absolutely bulldozed by Ray Davis for 280 yards and four touchdowns. Hell, they had THIRTEEN men on the field for a play and Davis STILL scored. The domination in this rivalry has flipped, and its downright jarring to see.
GEORGIA TECH YELLOW JACKETS (lost to Bowling Green 38-27)
Looks like getting Loeffler’ed is back on the menu, boys! Just when it seems like GT was making the turn after beating Wake Forest and dogfighting (still undefeated!) Louisville, the Wreck squandered a 14-0 lead by giving up 38 consecutive points to the 126th ranked in the S&P+ Falcons. It was a 38-14 reverse spreading at one point before a couple of late Tech touchdowns made it “respectable”.
ILLINOIS FIGHTING ILLINI (lost to Purdue 44-19)
The odds were even, both teams were searching for their first conference win and avoid going 0-2, a likely death knell even in the hamburger meat factory that is the Big Ten West. And it was 16-13 Purdue at the half. And then Illinois completely imploded in the second half, let the Boilers go on a 28-7 run, and is now firmly in the B1G basement.
TCU HORNED FROGS (lost to West Virginia 24-21)
I didn’t exactly buy the Frogs as being two-touchdown favorites over the ‘Eers, but…they were two touchdown favorites over the ‘Eers. They also lost on two blocked field goals. And saved Neal Brown’s job.
UCF KNIGHTS (lost to Baylor 36-35)
I stopped paying attention to this game. I think most of us did. It was 35-7, for crying out loud! Then suddenly I’m getting an alert that its 35-33, and Baylor’s got the ball back. And then they kick the field goal to take the lead. And then UCF drives back, pulls off the most ridiculous fourth and long conversion since the Hog Toss, and… attempts a field goal despite seemingly being ten yards out of range. IN between was a 12-minute meltdown on both sides of the ball that had to be seen to be believed.
UTAH UTES (lost to Oregon State 21-7)
Oregon State’s a good team and was playing for their lives after falling to Washington State the previous week, but Utah’s offense was just so lifeless I gotta nominate them. Not even reaching 200 yards, not scoring until the five minute mark when the game was already 21-0… just watching them was utterly deflating. You could argue this has been coming from the opening week, and things finally caught up to them.
VIRGINIA CAVALIERS (lost to Boston College 27-24)
I kinda had whoever was going to lose this penciled in for a nomination, considering this might just be the power-conference pillow fight of the year. That’s the still-winless Cavaliers, who, despite forcing four BC turnovers, blew a 21-7 lead and surrendered the winning FG with just two minutes left.
