Emily says in the pilot that they will pay for Chilton only IF Lorelai agrees that her and Rory will visit them for dinner every single Friday night. Lorelai starts to protest but Emily says: “Those are the rules. Otherwise, I’m sorry, we can’t help you.”

But… come on. If Lorelai has said “no” and left the house, Emily and Richard absolutely would have still paid, right?
