We all know about the illusive 1 point safety where the defending team safeties the offense during an extra point/conversion play. But I think there’s another way to score exactly 1 point that’s never been mentioned.
This is a combination of a few rules. Firstly, a field goal during an extra point play is 1 point and not 3. Secondly, a field goal can be place kicked like usual OR drop kicked. Thirdly, a field goal can only be kicked from behind the line of scrimmage (this is the tricky one).
What if an extra point gets blocked having never crossed the line of scrimmage? If the defence returns it all the way that’s 2 points. But what if someone drop kicks a field goal during that return? Technically it’s behind the original line of scrimmage (depending on your definition of “behind”) and would result in 1 point due to it being an extra point/conversion play.
However improbable this may be, is it technically an allowable 1 point play per the rules?
