With week 6 of college football finished, and we are left with a series of hyped teams taking some hard losses. Lets waste no time and get into the highlights of the weekend!

The Nathan Drake “Taste For Adventure” Fraud of the Week:

For first-time readers, the Nathan Drake “Taste For Adventure” Fraud of the Week award is my personal designation for which team has proved to be the most fraudulent by putting themselves behind either the race for the playoffs or their own conference title. Other teams that make a fool of themselves will receive [Runner-Up] Distinctions in their recaps.

The Highlights:

Iowa State v. Cincinnati:

  • “Sell the run? Bet.”
    • [The whole Cincinnati O-Line prior to committing two ineligible man downfield penalties in the same set of downs]
  • After a solid showing in Ames last week, the Cyclones traveled to Cincinnati to challenge the Bearcats. Despite being a 1.5 point underdog, Iowa State was looking to be the first team this season to secure bowl eligibility and to keep their undefeated season alive. Opening the game with a 17 point deficit in the first quarter isn’t a good way to accomplish that. Now caught playing catch up for the remainder of the game, the Cyclones did what they could to claw back into the game, outscoring the Bearcats in every other quarter of the game, Brendan Sorsby and the rest of the Cincinnati offense ensured that an insurmountable gap remained for the Cyclones.  Also, style points to Tawee Walker for truck-sticking two defenders on back to back plays.
  • A ton of credit is due for Cincinnati in this one. If it weren’t for the endless self inflicted wounds by way of penalties, this game would’ve been a blowout victory. Ever since the Nebraska matchup (one that was one overthrown pass away from a Bearcat victory mind you), Cincinnati has done a number on their competition, beating the offenses of both Kansas and Iowa State while doing what they could on defense to keep the lid on their games. This win is huge for Satterfield, who entered this season on a decently warm seat after an previously unimpressive tenure. With two wins now secured against the Hateful 8 (one of which being against a top 15 team), making a bowl game is certainly in the cards. Can they keep up their momentum and finally make their return to the postseason?
  • In this new age of college football where rosters are much shallower than they used to be, what separates the good teams from the playoff contenders are the ones that figure out how to keep their players healthy. There’s a reason why Ohio State didn’t drop 60 on Minnesota on Saturday. Could they have done that? Absolutely. Would it be an absolutely boneheaded decision by the coaching staff to go all out against a middling B1G team that could potentially injure star players that will make a difference in marquee matchups? Certainly. Case in point, there was no benefit for the Cyclones to play the way they did against Arizona, and all that Iowa State had to show for that performance was one win in exchange for the loss of two star cornerbacks. Combine the tough defensive losses with unusually sloppy QB play from Rocco with little offensive urgency in the 4th quarter, and this loss stings in a way that none of the three L’s from 2024 did. Iowa State’s slim shot at making a run in the postseason relied on staying healthy. With the defense now reverting to what it was at the end of last year, a shot at another trip to Arlington begins to slip away. It will take a major shift in gameplanning to get back on the bus to Jerryworld. While far from the biggest embarrassment of the weekend, there must be two [Runner-up]’s this weekend. It’s a shame that it has to go to the Cyclones…

Texas v. Florida:

  • The hype for Arch Manning is effectively dead outside of the ESPN press boxes. If Florida of all teams is able to both beat you and not completely choke away the game, then you’re in for a world of hurt for the remainder of your schedule.
  • Despite the win, Napier still needs to be shown the door. Somehow this game was as close as it was in the 4th quarter, and any competent coach would’ve shelved these [Runner-up] Frauds with ease.
  • Florida is on deck to square off against the better Texas school in the SEC, it probably won’t be close.
  • The Red River Shootout is up next week for Texas. I know better than to write off the Longhorns in this one, as Oklahoma is still recovering from their QB loss and rivalry games are always a fickle thing. Besides, if Arch gets benched for Texas’ backup, then Oklahoma will be facing a much tougher offense to contain.

Penn State v. UCLA:

  • When I said that Penn State was going 9-3 this year, I didn’t think that one of the games in the L column would be against the Bruins. The Big Game Franklin curse was supposedly a double edged sword, also ensuring that Penn State doesn’t ever lose these kinds of games that they have no business losing. Lo and behold, the quest for 0-12 for UCLA is cut short in stunning fashion, and all we are left with is a myriad of questions around both programs.
  • Did the firing of DeShawn Foster turn around the Bruins’ season? Is Nico still a good quarterback? Is UCLA even gonna win another game this year? I have no clue, but because this game had the funniest possible outcome, I’ll just roll with it.
  • Is there a need to have a serious discussion about James Franklin? Maybe at the end of the season, but considering how the Nittany Lions were in the semifinals last year and on the doorstep of the national title game, hot seat talk doesn’t feel right. Besides, firing a successful coach doesn’t always result in the perfect hire coming in to pick up the pieces. That all being said, this shouldn’t have even been a game. This loss will probably be the sole thing that keeps Penn State out of the playoffs. Say what you want about Notre Dame’s two losses, but they were respectably close against the best team in the ACC and what could be the best team in the SEC. What does Penn State have? A lethargic performance against one of the best of the B1G and an utter tank job against the bottomfeeders of the west coast? The Nathan Drake “Taste For Adventure” Fraud of the Week award was made for teams like these. Even the AP knew better than to rank these clowns!

Baylor v. K-State:

  • Fire Matt Wells.
  • Fire Dave Aranda.
  • Need I say more?

Texas Tech v. Houston:

  • Tech didn’t waste any time putting the game away, stuffing the undefeated Houston Cougars on the road while taking the foot off the gas in the 2nd half. I genuinely don’t think there is a single game that Tech will lose until December. We still have another 8 weeks to get through for the season, but the Red Raiders are the one constant in the sea of chaos that is the Big XII.
  • Houston shouldn’t hang their heads much on this one, as Bowl eligibility still remains within grasp for the Cougars. There’s plenty of time left to secure that postseason trip this year.

Georgia v. Kentucky:

  • Georgia won this one, as they should’ve. The only reason I bring this game up is because Mark Stoops reportedly discussed his buyout terms with Kentucky athletics earlier last week. When pressed about this, he said “There’s zero chance I’m walking away [from Kentucky]. There’s no quit in me, so that’s unequivocally 100 percent false. Anyone who tells you that is lying.”
  • In other words, Stoops is probably getting fired by the end of the season.

Alabama v. Vandy:

  • The haters were denied a three course meal in the 3:30PM timeslot. The Commodores gave it their all in this game, maintaining a lead for a good chunk of the start of the game. The Crimson Tide woke up however, and pulled ahead with forced turnovers, forced fumbles, and explosive offensive attacks to get another statement win for their resume.
  • Despite their first L of the season, Vandy still remains in a pretty good spot for the SEC title race. With the remainder of their foes looking much easier than their preseason rankings made them look to be (with the exceptions of Mizzou and Tennessee), running the table is still possible for Clark Lea’s crew.
  • Alabama has successfully reinserted themselves firmly in the conversation for the SEC with this win against the Commodores. However, the remainder of the schedule is tough as nails, with four ranked opponents standing in the Crimson Tide’s way. Will DeBoer be able to keep up his momentum?

After this weekend, the race for the conferences got shuffled up a bit. Who’s left to lead the race to the championship games?

ACC:

  • [Miami] Remains firmly in the lead despite nearly pulling a Cristobal classic against Florida State.
  • [Georgia Tech] certainly won this bye week with a decent amount of teams ahead of them in the polls taking hard losses. Of course, the trip to Charlotte is theirs to lose.
  • [Virginia] breaks into the top three of the ACC with their win over Louisville.
  • Honorable Mentions:
    • [Duke] is undefeated in conference play, and running the table could get the Blue Devils to Charlotte with a little help from those ahead of them.
    • [Louisville] is teet…
