Jared Keeso has entered my limited list of “I’ll watch whatever they’re in and whatever they make”.
I kept seeing Letterkenny being suggested and recommended all over various TV subreddits and it’s looked like, please forgive me, American redneck rubbish. 😬 (We all make mistakes, right? 🫠)
Somehow I learned it was a Canadian show, a comedy, and so I gave it a go. But I have to admit, even when I started watching the tv episodes (it was a web series first) I was very underwhelmed. I’m Australian and I couldn’t help feeling like I missing something… I didn’t get the humour. Which was weird because we’re in the same Commonwealth and share a Head of State. 🤔 And I’ve enjoyed loads of other Canadian shows.
But the recommendations came from such solid sources, and the main guy was a hottie (I’m only human) so I persisted. I also googled some of the references, including practically every reference to Canadian ice hockey culture 😆 I was clueless in this area. Eventually I started to get it, get the culture, the humour, the cheekiness. And omg it was so worth it. Because then I got to experience some of the best moments and episodes of television ever created. !>The revenge on Dierks is magical television, the music, the cinematography (is that’s what it’s called in tv?), the power of every frame without a word of dialogue, I was transfixed and rewatch the segment regularly. Gives me chills every time.<!
I have three episodes left and I’ve been sitting on them for over three months. I can’t bring myself to end this show. I know I can start Shoresy right after and get a bit more of a fix from the extended universe. But it won’t be the same.
While I wait to be ready for the last episode of Letterkenny, I watched 19-2 with Keeso and Adrian Holmes. Holy shit what an awesome show. Of course it was a delight to see the faces that Keeso would take with him into Letterkenny, (so glad I met McMurray before JM Brouillard 😡) but it wasn’t just that. You can see what a solid actor Keeso is becoming (plus little hints of Wayne in there), and I can only assume the creative filming and storytelling techniques that elevated 19-2 above the average cop show into stellar television way ahead of its time inspired Keeso and his creative team to be brave enough to do the same with a quirky, Canadian comedy.
And I think that’s why it’s so highly and repeatedly recommended in so many tv show subs. It’s a true and rare gem of exceptional television, but can be easily missed by judging the show from its cover. And it lead me to another gem, 19-2. I expect Shoresy and Littlekenny will be fun too.
How about you? How did you find Letterkenny? And did you fall for Keeso’s creative talent as hard as I did?
