Hello r/CFB! Welcome to the 2025 Big XII Uniform Tracker - Week 5! In case you are new to the tracker, 1.) Thank you for reading! 2.) I provide a few of my thoughts on the game, the uniforms, some stats associated with them and occasionally a brief history of the game/rivalry and/or fun facts. We’ve got some great games and good looking uniforms to review as most of our Big 12 teams battle in their first conference game!

I’m u/matte_purple, and let’s 3,2,1 go!

Arizona State University Sun Devils vs TCU Horned Frogs (ASU Wins, 27-24)

ASU: Black/Black/Black (Link)

TCU: White/White/Purple (Link)

Friday night lights in Tempe! Sun Devils continued what has become a pleasant tradition in blackout contests, notching their seventh win over a Top-25 team in a blackout game since the 2011 season. WR Tyson had a streak of 11-straight games with over 60 receiving yds end at Baylor, but went right back to it against the Horned Frogs, totalling 126 receiving yds and 2 TDs, while generally embarrassing the TCU secondary. TCU’s Josh Hoover did not look like the QB we’ve seen through the season, throwing for 242 yds but also two interceptions, fumbling the ball on a sack - one of six ASU sacks that night - and heaving several other turnover-worthy passes. TCU may have pushed to an early lead, but it was the Sun Devil’s game after TCU’s field goal in the second quarter, as the Horned Frogs gave the game away time after time in the 4th, culminating in another Arizona State “nail-in-the-coffin” FG. The most unusual stat is TCU’s rushing attack, as each of the three TDs for the ‘Frogs were rushes, but the team totalled only 10 net rushing yds. A bonkers night for the team in purple.

This is the first full head-to-toe blackout uniform the Sun Devils have worn since 2018, and the new helmet is wowing me already. In the past, ASU has used a matte finish for their black shells. This year, they used a slightly different satin finish that looks amazing. They eschewed the helmet stripe in order to show it off. Alongside the new black helmet, this is the first black uniform ASU has worn since 2023- the “Ghost Story” uniform. The new adidas “Strategy” quirks can be seen more easily here, notably the chest-plate style stitching up the center, but I’m still a fan of how this standard ASU template looks on a black field. The only maroon spot on the uniform is outlining the small pitchfork on the leg. That’s the one thing I would change. Maybe find a way to include more maroon, but in fairness, it is a hard color to match to black. But overall a GREAT update to the blackout look, even though I like the “Ghost Story” blackout combo from 2023 a little bit more. Since there is only one other black uniform appearance for ASU on the tracker, their record in black is a sound 2-0.

TCU’s choice was the perfect outfit to contrast a blackout look, and one of my favorite away combos. Funny enough, it’s the exact same combination TCU wore in Week 5 of 2024, in a win against KU. Since those two are the only games it’s been worn in since 2022, it brings the uniform record to 1-1. I don’t know why this combo isn’t more popular! The purple pants are one of the nice parts about this updated TCU look, and the purple facemask helps to tie it all together. And, while it doesn’t change how I feel about the TCU uniform downgrade from 2024, it’s worth noting how cool the reflective twill number outline is here. I am wondering if we’ll see the stand alone Frog helmets at all this season, in chrome or otherwise, but it’s only Week 5. This was one of my favorite uniform clashes of the week.

University of Houston Cougars at Oregon State University Beavers (UH Wins, 27-24)

UH: White/White/Red (Link)

OSU: Black/Orange/Black (Link)

The second Friday night game of the pack, and the second nail-biter comeback game on Big 12 Friday. This one featured the Cougars playing the Beavers for the first time since 1970. Their last battle in Oregon wasn’t even Corvallis, but rather Portland back in 1960 where the MLS Portland Timbers play now. That means this is Houston Football’s first trip to the Heart of the Willamette Valley. While it may be one to forget for the Beavers, the Coogs will remember this comeback for a long time. QB Conner Weigman threw for 270 yds and two long fourth-quarter TDs, the Coog special teams unit blocked a FG to force overtime, and the defense stopped a fourth-and-1 attempt in OT to allow for a Houston walk-off field goal, and their only lead of the game. The game was not going well for Houston after the 1st half, but it came together nicely in the end. This was undoubtedly a great precursor to Houston’s next game, when they welcome 12th ranked Texas Tech. The Beavers fall to 0-5 for the first time since 1996.

The Beavers wore a less common look than what we saw them wear against Texas Tech in Lubbock, donning Black/Orange/Black for the first time since 2022. The black helmets here have been worn in 4 games or more since 2018, but they elected to remove the center stripe in their 2024-2025 appearances. I think that was the right decision. Similar to what we see with OK-State, it helps to let the individual pieces and logo breathe a little more. And check out my favorite small element in these: the sublimated beaver tail pattern in the numbers (can be seen better here, if you zoom in). This feels more tasteful than the tree-ring pattern inlaid in the Beaver’s last uniform set but still gives a hyper specific detail that I love. The combo itself is great, I’d love to see this one get more action.

Houston’s combination is another pretty uncommon one. I had to go back to 2021 to find this same color combo, worn vs USF. The Coogs utilize the reverse far more often, with the only red piece being the helmet in many of their away matchups. But I really enjoy this one! The white is a good foil to the orange and black, and the red pants give a really nice pop to this night game. These do suffer a little bit from the Nike F.U.S.E template woes of pushing the numbers and wordmark too low, but I can live with that if it means we get to keep the unique wordmark, which is one of my favorite additions from the 2025 update. 1-0 since 2022!

University of Cincinnati Bearcats at University of Kansas Jayhawks (UC Wins, 37-34)

UC: Black/White/Black (Link)

KU: White/Blue/Blue (Link)

The Jayhawks offense was a powerhouse. They totaled 597 yds on offense, largely thanks to QB Jalon Daniels and his 419 yds and 4 TDs. He added 55 rushing yds and orchestrated a final scoring drive to put KU up 34-30 with only 1:45 left in the game. WR Emmanuel Henderson Jr. had 214 receiving yds, the first Jayhawk WR to notch over 200 in a game since 2017, and had a highlight worthy 93 yd TD pass on KU’s first play of the game. The defense, on the other hand, was not great. KU was carved up even more than Cincy’s defense was, as the Bearcats compiled 603 yds of offense. Cincy was 6-for-6 in the redzone, 7-16 on 3rd down, and 3-3 on 4th down, scoring the last points of the game with 29 seconds left. This was reminiscent of the early 2010s days of Big 12 ball. All gas, no brakes. Notably, HC Lance Leipold is 4-12 in his last 16 one score games at KU.

KU trotted out a well worn combination here. The white helmet on a blue field has been worn 4 times, in 2022, 2023, and now 2025, with a record of 2-2. It’s not my personal favorite for KU, as I tend to prefer a more symmetrical uniform to this more “lopsided” showing. White pants would have made all the difference here. What I do like here is the helmet. I’ve always preferred the Jayhawk on a white shell; it just makes the colorful logo pop nicely. While I was doing research for this entry, I counted the games since we’ve seen the Trajan KU on the lid: 33 games. Kansas has embraced the Jayhawk all the way, and their uniforms are SO MUCH BETTER for it. KU will head to Orlando to battle the Knights on Saturday.

There it is! Cincinnati finally broke out their classic black helmet. This is by far the latest they’ve shown up in a season EVER. And I checked! Black helmets have appeared in almost every season by Week 3. As much as I love variety in combos and rotating uniforms, I am very glad that the black helmets are back, presumably for the majority of the season. I’ve always been of the mind that Cincy looks best when emphasizing black. These tuxedo suits are worn by the Bearcats fairly often, appearing 7 times since 2022, with a record of 4-3 in that time. Cincy returns home to face Iowa State next!

University of Central Florida Knights vs Kansas State University Wildcats (K-State Wins, 34-20)

UCF: Gold/White/Black (Link)

K-State: Silver/Purple/Silver (Link)

UCF returned to Manhattan, Kansas with a chip on their shoulder and a grudge: K…
