HOW TO READ THIS TABLE

Teams are ranked in their order from the Logo (note for mobile users: everywhere you see a “Logo” link, that means that inline flair is shown on old.reddit.com/r/cfb) AP Poll for Week 1 (That is, the pre-season rankigns that apply during Week 1 games). The column to the right of the team name shows the number of points that team received using the AP Poll’s Borda count rules. The following two columns show information about each team’s previous and upcoming games. The following columns show how many votes for each ranking the team received. The ‘U’ column shows how many voters left the team unranked (off their ballots entirely). Gridlines are placed every 5 rows and columns for ease of reading. A thick line is placed below the 25th-ranked team to distinguish “ranked” teams above it to “receiving votes” teams below it.

Some cells are shaded to highlight points of interest. The green diagonal highlights how many voters ranked a team exactly where they ended up in the overall poll. For example, Logo Alabama is ranked 10th in this week’s poll, and 12 voters placed the Crimson Tide exactly in their 10th spot. Values for which a team received no votes at that rank are shaded in red, while placements chosen by only exactly one voter are highlighted in blue. Some unique votes are annotated with the name of the corresponding voter. The most common selection (the mode) for each team is shaded yellow unless it matches the team’s rank. Finally, since there are very few votes that ever end up near the top-right or bottom-left of the chart, those cells are filled in with black diagonally as much as possible without covering up any nonzero values. This helps naturally guide the eye while viewing the chart and helps locate the most unusual votes. We lightheartedly call these the “Wilner” diagonals. We also poke a little fun at the teams that lost last week.

Finally, I note violations of the Condorcet Criterion on the bottom left corner of the black space. These occur when Team A is ranked above Team B in the poll, but Team B would win if you ignored the points system and just asked the voters “Which team do you think is better?” I note every instance of this when it would affect the placement of a team in the Top 25, but not necessarily if it only flips teams’ positions in the receiving-votes category.

This season, scores will be highlighted (lowlighted) in black to indicate a loss instead of using a W/L column. I did this at the end of the season last year, and it was well received, so it returns for this entire season. This way is easier to see at a glance and slightly reduces the clutter on the left side of the table.

COMMENTARY FOR THIS WEEK

Two votes set the upper Wilner diagonal this week. Javon Edmonds ranked Logo Mississippi 12th, while Stephen Means dropped Logo Pennsyltucky Penn State way down to 20th after their loss to Logo Oregon. Four different votes set the lower Wilner diagonal: Logo Missouri at #8 (Bob Ballou), Logo Notre Dame at #9 (Kirk Kenney), Logo South Florida at #14 (Stephen Means), and Logo Louisville at #18 (Chris Murray). Damien Sordelett’s vote for Logo Las Vegas at #24 also technically ends up on the diagonal as its rightmost end.

There is an unusual amount of hivemind uniformity among voters as to which teams should be ranked, even if they can’t agree on the order. All of the top 16 teams (the last of which being Logo Vanderbilt) swept all 66 ballots this week. At 17, Logo Georgia Tech missed three ballots. Moreover, no team’s most-common placement was unranked until Logo Virginia all the way down at 24. All those occur quite a bit lower on the table than ususal. For any given team, we can use the standard deviation (counting missed ballots as zero points) to find the following most- and least-agreed upon teams:

Team St. Dev.
Florida State 4.02
Texas 3.76
Notre Dame 3.61
Georgia Tech 3.44
Penn State 3.27
Illinois 2.11
Texas A&M 1.56
Miami (FL) 0.71
Oregon 0.66
Ohio State 0.60

Teams outside the top 25 received 107 votes (6.5%) for a total of 270 points (1.3%) this week. The highest vote among them was Stephen Means’ vote for Logo South Florida at 14. There were 83 unique team-rank pairs this week (5.0%), while 385 votes matched their team’s rank in the poll (23%). For the first time this season, the most-matched team isn’t just the #1 Logo Buckeyes. They share the honor with Logo Miami (FL) at 46 matches each. The least-matched team was newcomer Logo Virgina, with only three matches. Kate Rogerson had the most matches of any voter this week with 14, while Haley Sawyer and Shaun Goodwin managed to match no teams at all.

There is not a lot of Condorcet weirdness this week, resulting in only three flips. Logo Iowa State would be ahead of Logo Mississipi State University and Agricultural and Mechanical College Louisiana State by the slim margin of 34-32. Likewise, Logo Missouri would jump Logo Florida Panhandle State by the same margin. Finally, at the very bottom of the top 25, Logo Arizona State would swap with Logo Virginia, 29-21, with 16 voters ranking neither team. In the receiving votes section, Logo Utah clears Logo South Florida by a score of 17-12, mostly due to appearing on more ballots.
