I’m curious to hear from anyone who remembers watching the CBS two-night miniseries Helter Skelter when it first aired in April 1976.
It pulled in almost 40 million viewers and was one of the most-watched TV movies of its time.
The next day in school, kids were talking about it. Some even started copying Manson mannerisms. Years later I realized that it wasn’t just me — this TV movie seemed to leave a weird psychic dent on people who saw it.
So, if you were there in ’76:
Do you remember what it was like watching it?
Did people at your school or workplace talk about it the next day?
Did it scare you, or did you just move on like it was any other TV movie of the week?
I’d like to read your memories.
