Why was the majority of the cast of "The Practice" fired unceremoniously at the end of its 7th Season?

The sole ones who stayed were Cameryn Manheim, Steve Harris and Michael Badalucco. Everybody else got the boot. At least, Dylan McDermott was allowed to come back for a guest spot.

I hadn’t seen a massive cast firing like this since Chicago Hope got rid of most of its cast so they could bring back Mandy Patinkin.
