Georgia is the favorite this weekend, as they should be. Alabama got pantsed by FSU and Georgia survived their test against Tennessee. Georgia should win this game.
But there is reason for Alabama to be hopeful: weird recent dominance of the rivalry that kind of makes no sense? Yes Alabama has been good for awhile, but so has Georgia. In fact Georgia is now the only team to be consistently the odds favorite over Alabama for a five year period.
AND YET
Georgia beat Alabama in 2007 in overtime to give Alabama their first loss under coach Nick Saban. It was famous not for a Matthew Stafford game winning TD but for the announcer asking “What’s up with Brittany?” directly before Matthew Stafford’s game winning TD. THE PLAYERS THAT LEFT THAT 2007 TEAM WERE THE LAST PLAYERS AT GEORGIA TO HAVE A WINNING RECORD AGAINST ALABAMA.
But wait, players like Brock Bowers stayed only three seasons from 2021 to 2023. These NFL ready superstars of Georgia went an insane 42-2. They only had two losses. THOSE TWO LOSSES WERE BOTH TO ALABAMA.
Those players did beat Alabama in the 2022 Championship game in Indianapolis but Georgia had lost to Alabama earlier in the SEC Championship Game in Atlanta. Five of the past eleven meetings were in Atlanta and two were in Athens. Georgia has lost them all which means GEORGIA HAS LOST TO ALABAMA IN THE STATE OF GEORGIA 7 STRAIGHT TIMES.
Alabama is very rarely not the betting favorite. Georgia in the past 4 meetings has been favored to win the game. Georgia has CLEARLY been the better team for the past 4 seasons. And yet. GEORGIA IS 1-3 WHEN FAVORED AGAINST ALABAMA IN THE PAST 4 MEETINGS.
And just for funsies, starting in 2014 the winner of the SEC has either been Alabama or Georgia every year except for 2019 when LSU put out one of the best teams of all time. So 10 of the past 11 SEC Champs have been either Alabama or Georgia
