HOW TO READ THIS TABLE

Teams are ranked in their order from the Logo (note for mobile users: everywhere you see a “Logo” link, that means that inline flair is shown on old.reddit.com/r/cfb) AP Poll for Week 1 (That is, the pre-season rankigns that apply during Week 1 games). The column to the right of the team name shows the number of points that team received using the AP Poll’s Borda count rules. The following two columns show information about each team’s previous and upcoming games. The following columns show how many votes for each ranking the team received. The ‘U’ column shows how many voters left the team unranked (off their ballots entirely). Gridlines are placed every 5 rows and columns for ease of reading. A thick line is placed below the 25th-ranked team to distinguish “ranked” teams above it to “receiving votes” teams below it.

Four teams received votes this week after getting none last week: Logo Memphis (11 votes, 23 points), Logo Maryland (5 votes, 6 points), Logo Central Florida (1 vote, 3 points), and Logo North Texas (2 votes, 2 points). Conversely, eight teams received no votes after getting at least one last week: Logo Tulane, Logo North Carolina State, Logo South Carolina, Logo Baylor, Logo Southern Methodist, Logo Nebraska, Logo Navy, and Logo Clemson. As far as the top 25 teams go, Logo Utah and Logo Auburn were replaced by Logo Texas Christian and Logo Brigham Young.

Some cells are shaded to highlight points of interest. The green diagonal highlights how many voters ranked a team exactly where they ended up in the overall poll. For example, Logo Texas is ranked 10th in this week’s poll, and 9 voters placed the Longhorns exactly in their 10th spot. Values for which a team received no votes at that rank are shaded in red, while placements chosen by only exactly one voter are highlighted in blue. Some unique votes are annotated with the name of the corresponding voter. The most common selection (the mode) for each team is shaded yellow unless it matches the team’s rank. Finally, since there are very few votes that ever end up near the top-right or bottom-left of the chart, those cells are filled in with black diagonally as much as possible without covering up any nonzero values. This helps naturally guide the eye while viewing the chart and helps locate the most unusual votes. We lightheartedly call these the “Wilner” diagonals.

Finally, I note violations of the Condorcet Criterion on the bottom left corner of the black space. These occur when Team A is ranked above Team B in the poll, but Team B would win if you ignored the points system and just asked the voters “Which team do you think is better?” I note every instance of this when it would affect the placement of a team in the Top 25, but not necessarily if it only flips teams’ positions in the receiving-votes category.

This season, scores will be highlighted (lowlighted) in black to indicate a loss instead of using a W/L column. I did this at the end of the season last year, and it was well received, so it returns for this entire season. This way is easier to see at a glance and slightly reduces the clutter on the left side of the table. We also poke a bit of fun at them by changing their names.

COMMENTARY FOR THIS WEEK

The upper Wilner diagonal was set jointly by Steven Johnson and Sean Reider placing Logo Penn State 12th. Reider touches the diagonal a second time by ranking Logo Texas 21st. Its left end is set by Koki Riley and Jon Wilner himself putting Logo Ohio State 4th, while its right end is set by Stephen Means leaving off Logo Tennessee entirely. Riley’s vote for Logo Mississippi at 25th comes very close, but does not touch the diagonal. Three votes set the lower Wilner diagonal this week. Kirk Kenney placed Logo Missouri 9th, Damien Sordelett put Logo Brigham Young 12th, and Chris Murray had Logo Louisville 17th. On the left end of the diagonal, David Jablonski put Logo Oklahoma in his top spot. On the right end, Chad Bishop and Dylan Sinn both placed undefeated Logo North Texas in their last spot. Jamal St. Cyr was the only voter to rank Logo Central Florida, but he didn’t put them high enough to wind up on the diagonal.

The lowest-ranked team to sweep all 66 ballots was 18th-ranked Logo Vanderbilt. For once, the highest-ranked team to miss a ballot isn’t directly above them, as Logo Tennessee faltered at 15th onto the upper Wilner diagonal. Teams outside the top 25 received 131 votes (7.9%) for a total of 436 points (2.0%). Although there are only 11 teams in that category this week, they still got a normal percentage of votes and points. 82 team-vote pairs (5.0%) were unique. 313 votes (19%) matched their teams’ ranks exactly this week. The most-matched team, as usual, was Logo Ohio State in 1st-place with 52 matches (79%). The least-matched team was Logo Brigham Young, as only 4 voters placed them in exactly 25th. On a voter-by-voter basis, Nicole Auerbach had the most matches with 12: Ohio State, Miami (FL), Louisiana State, Georgia, Florida State, Texas A&M, Indiana, Texas Tech, Iowa State, Tennessee, Illinois, and Texas Christian. On the other hand, four voters only had one match on their entire ballot: Javon Edmonds, Shaun Goodwin, Greg Madia, and Mason Young. Using the standard deviation as an imperfect measure, we find the most- and least-disagreed about teams below. Compared to previous weeks, there is less disagreement about the most controversial teams, but a bit more about highly-ranked teams.

Team St. Dev
Logo Alabama 3.72
Logo Notre Dame 3.65
Logo Brigham Young 3.27
Logo Tennessee 3.06
Logo Missouri 3.04
Logo Louisiana State 1.83
Logo Oregon 1.65
Logo Miami (FL) 1.48
Logo Georgia 1.33
Logo Ohio State 0.71

There are quite a few Condorcet Criterion violations this week. First, over 60% of voters put Logo Penn State above Logo Miami (FL), even though the Canes ended up with 19 more points. Similarly, most voters had Logo Florida State over Logo Oklahoma despite their 11-point deficit. Right below them, Logo Texas would be above Logo Texas A&M by more than a 60% margin. Logo Alabama manages to leapfrog both Logo Georgia Tech and Logo Tennessee. Near the bottom, we have a couple ties. Logo Illinois and Logo Texas Christian are level at 29 votes each, with 8 voters omitting both teams. Similarly, the Horned Frogs also tie with Logo Brigham Young at 25 apiece with 16 voters dismissing them both. Finally, Logo Mississippi State would be above Logo Eastern Oklahoma Auburn for the first-team-out spot, although 22 voters ranked neither of them.
