In light of recent events, I thought it would be interesting to discuss how governments worldwide have censored or even outright banned certain TV shows for a variety of reasons. Note that I’m specifying governments, if a network does it of its own accord it’s not the same thing.
Sometimes local TV shows are affected, but this is especially common with foreign TV shows try to export to foreign markets with different rules.
The most common reason for censorship is the usual “won’t somebody please think of the children” and other morality related stuff. A show is considered too violent or sexual, and thus by law it can’t be shown in certain countries (at least not in certain time slots and public channels) unless it’s heavily censored. And it’s even worse if the show includes anything remotely gay or trans.
And of course, some more authoritarian countries will just ban anything that is remotely critical of their regime or their policies in any way. This is naturally the most controversial since
So what governments have banned, censored, or suppressed TV shows and for what reasons?
