I know this is an older show, sorry, just getting around to it and finished the series.
I was thinking that if they found a way to reverse the nuclear winter then it would give them a fighting chance and find a additional ways to sabotage the conversions. Perhaps find a resistant vaccine that prevents them from taking hosts so these pockets of fighters could create a resistance. Then the story could probably make it a few more seasons.
