Hello r/CFB! Welcome to the 2025 Big XII Uniform Tracker - Week 3! We are back in action, ready to track uniforms and review games for this exciting conference! In case you are new to the tracker, 1.) Thank you for reading! 2.) I provide a few of my thoughts on the game, the uniforms, some stats associated with them and occasionally a brief history of the game/rivalry and/or fun facts. This week, we saw only two Big 12 teams lose a game, and that’s because they were playing another Big 12 team! We’ll call it a clean sweep. Let’s see how they fared, what they wore, and discuss how they looked as well! It is college football season once again!
I’m u/matte_purple, and let’s 3,2,1 go!
University or Arizona Wildcats vs Kansas State University Wildcats (Arizona Wins, 23-17)
UA: White/Blue/White (Link)
K-State: Silver/White/Silver (Link)
Arizona finally put the game away in this weird and wild showdown. K-State looked down and out throughout the entire 1st half, trailing 17-3 heading to the break. Both teams had mishaps, with Arizona muffing a punt and missing 2 field goals (one was 62 yds out), and K-State wide receivers continually dropping passes while generally looking inept on offense. In an unprecedented start to the 3rd, the purple ‘Cats tied up the game in 5 minutes time, with one quick 75 yd rush and another easy redzone score after a badly snapped punt from Arizona. When Arizona was picked off by K-State after that score, things were looking up for K-State. Fifita responded by orchestrating a vicious rushing attack. He and his RB Ismail Mahdi combined for 237 rushing yds, and Fifita grabbed 2 TDs with his legs. K-State has looked downright embarrassing through 4 games, with this 1-3 start being their worst since 1989. Arizona rose to the challenge and has started 3-0 for the first time since 2015.
A week after facing one purple Wildcat team in Weber State, the Arizona Wildcats faced another in the K-State Wildcats. They donned some special helmets for this one, just as they wore alternates against KSU last year. These are similar to their helmets from the 80s, utilizing a chunkier throwback A and award stickers in the shape of a wildcat paw, another logo used from that timeframe. When adding this helmet to the classic Arizona uniform set, you get a tasteful throwback uniform that makes a lot of people happy. The asymmetrically colored stripes are just so rad, and mesh well on each of the uniform pieces. Arizona is 4-0 in this combo since I began tracking Arizona in 2023 - a perfect 4-0! This throwback block A is their first win in that same time period when wearing something other than the standard block A on the helmet (Script ‘Cats, American Flag/State outline logo, and Cactus logo), for a record of 1-3.
K-State may have gotten the alternate bug out of their system. This is the first time we’ve seen their away threads this season, the same style worn since 1989. These were updated to the Nike F.U.S.E template last year, but if there are any changes, I can’t pick them out. In a cruel inversion of the K-State standard, The Wildcats have actually lost 4 of their last 6 games all while wearing their silver helmet. The two victories have come while wearing their white helmet alternate. I’m gonna cry.
University of Colorado Buffaloes at University of Houston Cougars (Houston Wins, 36-20)
CU: White/White/White (Link)
UH: Red/Red/Red (Link)
Houston played with inspiration while hosting the Buffaloes, and it showed. Houston QB Conner Weigman sliced through Colorado, throwing for 222 yds and running for 83 yds and two TDs. CU played chase on the Coog’s lead the entire game, bringing the score to 14-16 by half, but the 3rd quarter was especially unkind to them. Houston ground out a 17 play drive for a field goal before promptly getting the ball back for a 9 play TD drive. QB Ryan Staub, in his first starting role of his career, looked passable in the first half but quickly unraveled in the 2nd half. He threw two INTs and just could not find a groove. HC Deion Sanders said it best: ““We’re not struggling, we’re getting our butts kicked. You don’t have to be polite.” Colorado hosts their northern neighbor Wyoming next, while Houston gets an off week to celebrate a 1-0 start in the Big 12.
While their game plan may not have looked fantastic, Colorado’s uniforms looked perfect in this one. For my first affirmation, I have to mention that there are no mountains on the legs. That’s already a massive improvement. The gold, geometric Flatiron Mountains design on the shoulders is a nice touch, but I am so glad we don’t see it elsewhere on the uniform. Second, I’ll note how rare the all white uniform was prior to 2023. The white helmet (probably my favorite lid from CU right now) was reintroduced in 2023 after taking a hiatus from 2019 on, making the combo possible and vaulting the whiteout to CU’s most worn away uniform since I’ve tracked them. W/W/W is now 2-2 on the tracker.
The Coogs wore all-red, their most worn home combo that has been worn at least once a year (if not twice) since their last year in the American. Wildly, this is actually their first win in them since I’ve been tracking, with a current record of 1-5. Moreover, this version is actually new! The 2025 update makes these all red suits look much better, adding some greatly appreciated white accents to break up the color around the collar and cuffs. The fabric on the pant venting still looks like a slightly different color, but I’ll settle for the fixed stripe. Many readers know that I have harped on that for years. A great win for Houston, and they finally get the all-red uniform monkey off their back!
Baylor University Bears vs Samford University Bulldogs (BU Wins, 42-7)
BU: Green/Green/Green (Link)
SAM: White/White/White (Link)
Baylor was up by 14 after only 6 minutes, and only scored one TD in the 2nd half. The final score seems normal, but there was an intangible feeling of “it’s not over” in this game, not until the final whistle. QB Sawyer Robertson played into the fourth quarter. The most successful parts of the Baylor team were the running game and special teams. RB Bryson Washington toted the rock 21 times for 135 yards and a pair of TDs, adding an 11-yard catch. This was his eighth 100+ yd rushing game – which ranks 6th in BU history. Special teams blocked a punt on the opening drive, and were perfect on XPs with half of their 4 punts rolling behind the 20. There were a shocking number of INTs in this one, 2 from Baylor and 3 from the Bulldogs. Samford also lost 2 fumbles, so this was a very interesting matchup, despite the score. Still, a dub is a dub!
Baylor wore their most regularly appearing combo, the all green. It’s been worn in just under 30% of all games since 2022, with a record of 8-4 in that time. Since the uniform update, its one of their more winning combos at 4-1. But personally, I think there are some better looks out there, especially Green/Green/Gold. But regardless of how I feel, the update is still pretty smooth. I’m still hopeful to see the Cursive Baylor on helmets, and Baylor did just recently release a whole bunch of gear with the “Growling Bear” logo, which could look sweet on a helmet. Baylor will host Arizona State on Saturday.
Samford isn’t a pushover by any means. The Bulldogs went to FCS playoffs in 2013, 2016, 2017, and 2022 most recently, where they lost to North Dakota State in the Quarterfinals. They’ve been in a bit of a slump since 2022, but current HC Chris Hatcher has a respectable record of 61–50, and is in his 11th season. As for their uniforms, I really appreciate the liberal use of blue on a very white canvas. The collar, cuffs, helmet stripe, facemask, accessories, and shoulder/chest numbers are all the same shade of deep blue, which softens the starkness. I do really like the metallic Bulldog logo up top, one of the more distinguished dog logos I’ve seen on a helmet before. These are not my favorite of the week, but they’re definitely not bad.
West Virginia University Mountaineers at University of Pittsburgh Panthers (WVU Wins, 31-24 OT)
WVU: Blue/Blue/Gold (Link)
PITT: Gold/White/White (Link)
Wow! What a finish for the 108th Backyard Brawl! QB Nicco Marchiol and Head Coach Rich Rod rallied West Virginia from 10 points down with 9 and a half minutes left to a rousing victory over touchdown-favorite Pitt. This one was special. Marichol led the team to a 14-3 lead, but the team fell behind after ending two straight series with INTs. The Mountaineers stayed gritty, rose up and delivered not just a tie ball game, but a huge score in OT and a stout defensive effort to win the ballgame. Special recognition also goes to DL Eddie Vesterinen, who had two big-time sacks and kept Pitt’s QB Holstein pressured all night. After the doubt of bringing in Rich Rod, a loss to Ohio, this win gave WVU some much needed spirit.
