Completely unserious but think about. A large part of Penn State’s ability to come back to relevance in the Franklin era has been their ability to shift their recruiting base from the Northeast to Maryland and Virginia, an area which in the 90s and 2000s was dominated by Virginia Tech. As Western PA has declined in population and the Northeast corridor has lost interest in football participation relative to other parts of the country, Virginia is the nearest ground for Penn State to recruit elite players.
Pry is from Altoona, PA and knows Franklin going back to his East Stroudsburg days. He was his dutiful lieutenant for years and then after a disappointing 7-5 season for the Nittany Lions when it looks like they might lose their grip on mid Atlantic football. Pry leaves for Virginia Tech who under his tenure is completely uncompetitive and now in a situation in which they’ll probably never be competitive again as they have very little shot at the Big Ten/SEC, permanently solidifying Penn State’s hold on DMV recruiting. I think this is the same reason why Franklin cares more about running up the score of Maryland than beating real teams.
