A David E. Kelley critically acclaimed series, won Best Drama Series two years in a row, and yet, the series suddenly lost its spark. Ratings suffered a steep fall and the mood changed. Gone was the dark humor, annoying characters got more screen time and by the last season, Lauren Holly’s transformation into Kmart Sheena Easton became the talk of the town for the wrong reasons. It got cancelled after just 4 seasons, it didn’t even get enough episodes in for syndication and I never see it on reruns, even though it won many awards and made David E. Kelley famous.

In the beginning, the balance between humor and drama worked however the series became overly quirky. I mean, the Pope serving as a witness for a smalltown trial? Fyvush Finkel chewing more scenery and in a love triangle with Ray Walston? Marlee Matlin’s character went from beingh a terrorist into the Mayor? It got ridiculous.
