Welcome to week 1 of the 2025 r/NFL Power Rankings. Congratulations to 16 teams, you’re making it to the Super Bowl. The other 16 are on an irreparable trajectory. Are week 1 kicker woes enough to derail the 49ers and Falcons? Are the Colts and Daniel Jones solid or are the Dolphins that bad? Will the Eagles continue to do enough to stave off the powerhouse Bills & Ravens? Will the Chargers be able to keep pace the whole season? With the Chiefs sputtering, are the Chargers ready to set the pace? Do the Cowboys get credit for good coaching (at least until Callahan specifically explained which rules he doesn’t understand?) Which winless team is best? Discuss! 29/32 Reporting

1. Eagles 1-0 Going into the game, the Eagles needed to do three things: 1) get to Dak early and often with their best player, Jalen Carter. 2) Don’t allow CeeDee to take advantage of Adoree Jackson and have Mitchell shadow him. 3) Involve AJ Brown as much as possible as the best weapon through the air. They failed to do all three things, and they still won. It wasn’t pretty, but Hurts played excellently. Next up, a Super Bowl rematch against Taylor Swift’s boyfriend/the lesser Kelce brother. Here we go again.
2. Bills +2 1-0 What even was that game? The Bills were dead in the water with a one percent win probability late in the fourth only to pull off a statement win against the Baltimore Ravens. This game had it all from a crazy tipped Keon Coleman clutch catch to an improbable Derrick Henry fumble. With 2 MVPs dueling against each other this was set up to be a shootout and it certainly lived up to the billing, being the early favorite for game of the year. Josh Allen went nuclear passing for 394 yards and accounting for 4 touchdowns as well as arguably delivering the soundbite of the year addressing Bills fans who left the game early. Shoutout to 41-year-old Matt Prater potentially creating a kicker controversy by going a perfect 3/3 on field goals as well as a monster game from Ed Oliver. The rest of the AFC was certainly put on notice as the Bills appear to be clear frontrunners for the 1 seed. The Bills hope to ride the momentum as the schedule lightens up heading into a divisional game with the Justin Fields led Jets.
3. Ravens -1 0-1 There’s a million different statistics floating around showing exactly how inexcusable that loss was. Bad clock management, poor play calling, and some unfortunate bounces all played their part but it can’t be summed up any easier than in the final 4 minutes the Bills scored 3 times while the Ravens failed to get a single first down. Everyone knows what absolute monsters Derrick Henry, Josh Allen and Lamar Jackson are but tip of the cap to Ed Oliver and Keon Coleman for being difference makers at the most crucial of times. Moving on to a home match up with an old friend when the Joe Flacco led Browns come to town this Sunday. Here’s hoping we don’t see a repeat of last year where the Ravens had a week 2 hangover against the Minshew led Raiders following a heartbreaking revenge game loss to the Chiefs by the slimmest of margins.
4. Packers +2 1-0 This is the first time in 7 years that the Packers started Week 1 in Lambeau. In that game, a high as balls Aaron Rodgers stormed back from a 20 point deficit to stun the Bears. I can’t quite remember such a more cathartic regular season game since then, until now. My god was that fun to watch. Look at this throw! Look at this sack! Look at this interception Just a totally complete ass kicking against a division rival. Could not dream of a better start to the season.
5. Chiefs -2 0-1 Well, the Chiefs have lost 1 game so if you listen to social media it’s about time to fire everyone not wearing #15 and tank for the 1st pick. Realistically it was a terrible start to the game and our defense looks beyond suspect. That said the offense came back out in the 2nd half and looked very good for a team missing it’s top 2 pass catchers. I’m not slamming the panic button at this point but this was definitely not the way I was hoping we’d look after getting embarrassed in our gold medal game last season.
6. Commanders +1 1-0 You love to start the season 1-0, especially against a division rival, especially when your team was clearly not at its best. The dangerous Washington offense showed off some of its lethality from last year, but certainly seemed to be missing a step. Timing on throws was off, catchable balls were dropped, and mental mistakes were made, leaving points on the board and leaving the Giants far more room to maneuverer than they should have had. Setting aside some expected week 1 mishaps, there’s a ton to look positively on: Jayden Daniels fresh off his rookie of the year campaign looks as capable as expected, Deebo is a nice new weapon for him to work with, and Bill Croskey-Merritt looks likely to give this running game a dimension it didn’t have last year. And then there’s the defense that put on some incredible stops at the goal line, limiting the Giants to a paltry 6 points. But the story of this game is dominance at the line of scrimmage - both units largely dominated at the line of scrimmage. Adam Peters may have cooked up something special with his offseason signings and drafting. A major test of how real any of this is awaits on Thursday Night Football, where the Commanders take on a surging Super Bowl favorite in Micah Parsons and the Green Bay Packers.
7. Chargers +6 1-0 Let me be as clear as possible about the following. This game unfolded the way it did due not to some failure by the Chiefs, but because of an incredible performance by a currently superior Chargers team. It doesn’t matter how many times the media obnoxiously screams the opposite. No, the Chiefs’ dynasty is not over. No, Andy Reid is not regressing as a head coach or playcaller. No, this wasn’t some fluke loss that KC will follow up with another undefeated half-decade against the blue and yellow. They simply got outplayed by a team with an elite QB and HC, a stifling defense, and young weapons already greater than anything Herbert has had the past few seasons. It’s not that the Chargers were the better team on Friday. No, the Chargers ARE the better team, full stop.
8. Buccaneers +1 1-0 I am mentally stable, and I can be trusted with the least intense Tampa Bay Buccaneers game :) streamable.com/ixabm6 (credit to whomever made the original compilation that I used as a basis for this meme)
9. Lions -4 0-1 Whelp, that was unfortunate. The Lions were thoroughly handled on both sides by a very sharp Packers team, losing the trench battle on both sides. If you’re looking for some silver lining beyond TeSlaa being fucking nuts, I thought Goff did well handling pressure and not forcing mistakes, and the run defense was quite solid for most of the afternoon. It will take some time for the offensive line to gel with two young, new starters in Mahogany and Ratledge, and a shock to the system like this should be good for the long term. Next week with Chicago at home will be a good litmus test for if there is any need to truly worry about season-long success, but for now it is worth pumping the brakes on any serious drawing of conclusions. (Also apologies for the donation misinformation from last blurb, I neglected to thoroughly vet the source and that is on me. Goff does plenty of donating and charity work in Detroit, but the numbers were erronious. Will not happen again.)
10. Rams -2 1-0 Vibes are high following a gritty and physical against a legit Texans team. The offense didn’t look great at times, but given offensive line injuries, dumb penalties, and no preseason snaps for starters, wasn’t unexpected. Adams was out on Stingley Island, leaving Puka to put the team on his back again, with both helping Stafford surpass 60k career passing yards. It was the defense that shined from start to finish, keeping Houston out of the endzone all day. There’s reason for LA to be excited about the Rams this year.
11. 49ers +1 1-0 The 49ers started the season off with a road win over the Seahawks on Sunday, pulling off the 17-13 victory in ugly fashion. The defense gave up a long TD drive in the first, then settled down and held Seattle to only a fg the rest of the day. The offense struggled, with 2 missed field goals, injuries to both Kittle and Jennings to take them out of the game, and some uncharacteristically poor throws from Purdy. But the team scraped out the win and will look to keep the momentum next week in New Orleans.
12. Bengals -1 1-0 Hey all, Bengals voter here. Imagine being me, you’re both a Bengals fan and a Florida Gators fan and you’re forced to watch Billy Napier and Zac Taylor coach in back to back days. I am in hell. This game was hell as a matter of fact, but it was a very expected kind of hell becau…
