With USF defeating Florida, USF has now claimed the CFB Belt.
This marks the first time a school from a non-Power conference wins the CFB Belt since September 10, 2022, when BYU defeated the reigning champions, Baylor, 26-20 in Double OT.
This also marks the first time a “Group of 5” team has ever won the CFB Belt since the term was introduced at the inception of the CFP era. For those curious about the last team that won the CFB Belt as a member of what would be defined as a “Group of X” conference by today’s definition, that title also belongs to the BYU Cougars, a WAC member, by defeating the Tulsa Golden Hurricanes, another WAC member, on October 19th, 1996, defeating them 55-30. And for those extra curious on the last “Group-of-X” team to beat a team from a Power conference, Tulsa did it on September 21, 1996, defeating the Iowa Hawkeyes, 27-20.
